Not able to purchase data

Ok, so I decided to buy a 3G modem from mtn and I've got the following problem.

In the MTN Fastlink software which installed with the modem I went to Airtime tab, load airtime and loaded 3xR180 vouchers bought from CNA. When I try to purchase data bundles the MTN Fastlink program keeps telling "timed out"

Any solutions to this?

Why not simply put the SIM in a phone and load in the normal way, through dialling 555 etc.?
