Two workers killed at Gold Fields' Kloof mine

Two mineworkers have lost their lives at Gold Fields' Kloof mine, after a seismic event measuring 1,2 on the Richter scale caused a fall of ground at the number four shaft at about 02:17 on Thursday.

Gold Fields spokesperson Andrew Davidson confirmed that the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and the Department of Minerals and Energy (DME) were currently at the scene performing an investigation.

The mineworkers were performing cleaning duties in the stope. No other persons were injured.

Pamodzi Gold has stopped all raiseline development work at the shafts at its East Rand operations, after an employee was killed at the mine on Tuesday.

An equipping team leader died after entering a discontinued end through a barricade at the operation’s number four shaft, it said on Wednesday, adding that it was still awaiting a post-mortem to determine the cause of death.

Last week, the company reported that two workers had died in a fire at its Orkney mine, in the North West province. A miner and a winch operator died as a result
