Im on 56K & yesterday I tried downloading a song using torrents and its actually pathetic how slow dial up is..it took 2 hours and its still not completely downloaded yet. So wat is the CHEAPEST option for dsl out there? Preferably something thats gives the extra 30gigs once u hit ur cap. How much would i pay in total per month (i.e incl rental &isp fees)? Sorry im too lazy to look for answers:-)

Openweb/WebAfrica as the ISP.
I'm using a 5GB/25GB IS based account (R329), and a WebAfrica SAIX prepaid account (R75) for international use after I hit my international cap on the IS account. But you can pick up a 2GB/28GB IS account for around 200 bucks.

Gonna be a tough choice who you choose for the DSL line though ;) My advice would be wait till August and order the 384 line.

Openweb is the best. http://www.openweb.co.za

I have a 2gb + openbrowse 192k for R229. I can even surf international sites after im capped!

I use a local torrent tracker and also the IS News Server.

It you are looking for CHEAP

IMO the cheapest and still good value for money is:

  • a 1GB plus 10GB local from openweb R121
  • Plus WebAfrica pre-paid R75 that do not expire for international browsing after your 1GB is used up. For me this acount will have to last a year. So lets say a monthly cost of about R7.
  • And then lastly R245 blood money to Telkom for a 384 line. (Price form 1 Aug - Unconfirmed AFAIK)

That give you a total of R373 (Normal phone rental and call costs excluded).

I used to pay for Dial-up - R300 for closer option 2 minus (cause its excluded above) about R100 for phone rental and calls plus ISP R75. Total R275.

For just about R100 more the benifits of ADSL is amaizing. If you find you need more bandwith and more speed you can always go for the more expensive packages later.

In the mean time while you are on dialup look at www.newzleech.com and use news downloads first before looking for torrants. I hardly ever use torrants.

If your ISP's news server don't carry binaries have a look at:
AstraWeb
YottaNews - Free, but not very reliable.

Lastly I would apply for a 384 line now, chanses are good that you won't get it installed before 1st of August :D

Thanks for all the replies..I'm definitely gonna try and twists my parents leg to get me ADSL coz dialup is crap and I need internet access for varsity stuff during the day. The stupid Telkom rental of R245 is what's putting me off and from what I hear other countries only have ISP fees. But why the upgrade from 1st Aug only. In Europe they upgrade their customers by a few MEGABITS in a matter of a few weeks not months.

OK IF I do manage to get it then I think I'll start off with a 1GB + 10GB local as willemvdm suggested but I'm sure I'd burn it in no time but R350-400 is all I'm willing to spend on DSL, I refuse to sign up for a service that's virtually ten times cheaper in other countries but what I need is a 24/7 connection with better-than-dialup speeds.

I've never had access to a broadband connection except maybe at varsity (I'm sure that qualifies as high speed access) and just by browsing sites my megs get finished pretty quick. I'd be doing normal browsing during the week and over the weekends using torrents and the IS newsserver :) PS I'd prefer fixed line ADSL. And why the hell is there no cable in this country?
