Not such a great move to Absolute Hosting

...but maybe not at the same price point as what the OP is currently paying. They have their placez. But not all the time.
A web app will come in at R1400/month.

No hardware. No server/CAL licensing. No maintenance. No power. Nothing. Just pure, reliable, service.

But sure. Let's keep pretending this is expensive.

100%...I can also take the middle ground. But if the OP is paying significantly less than that now, then it's not a great comparison is it? Unless you've perhaps got some form of idea as to what their current setup is and know that's all they need? You need to throw in a support plan which adds on price.

But sure, let's keep pretending it's not expensive for the small guy.

Hi @Neville

I was supposed to have responded earlier this morning to find out how things were going and have only managed to get to the forum now.

After taking a look through the logs I can see that there are no failed login attempts today so I suspect that you have made changes on Mandy's devices and all appears to be in order now?

If so, then hopefully we can rename this thread to "Not such a great move with a faulty email client" :)

If your a dot net dev, investigate Docker, then you can just run your app on a Linux machine in a container. Your dB as well, just download the image of your choice. AWS has a free tier for a year that could easily be setup. Also. Net core works on Linux natively just Google it.

We have many clients running .net on our AMD Epyc powered servers and at R79 per month they are an attractive offer.
This issue relates to the mail client failing authentication and being blocked on our servers as a result of too many failed logins and not an issue with our services or offering. This issue affects only one of the users using this mail domain, and the OP makes use of our services without issue (based on previous tickets)

My wife has a small business for which I develop and maintain her website. I am mostly a .Net developer so need Windows hosting. After Cybersmart recently shutdown their Windows hosting I moved the domain and hosting to Absolute Hosting. They seemed to come highly recommended and one of the few Windows server hosts in SA.

Ever since my wife's business partner, Mandy, has been unable to access her email from home. Her laptop and mobile phone have been setup correctly and she can access mail at the office using their Vodacom(or Telkom) connection and also on her phone using mobile data. My wife has no issues and accesses mail anywhere - at home we have Octotel fibre with Cool Ideas.

Mandy has Mweb fibre at home and whenever she tries to access her mail, it tells her to re-authenticate, as if she entered the wrong details. Absolute Hosting are telling her that her IP gets blocked by their Smarter Mail security software to prevent hacking and will block an IP after 8 attempts to login with incorrect details.
Mweb are saying there is no block from their side.
She never had issues when the domain was hosted with Cybersmart.

It is not like Mandy to sit and change mail configs in the car on the way home every day. So can anyone speculate as to what could be going on here? To me it seems like some sort of network issue between Mweb and Absolute Hosting?

Considering moving the ladies' domain AGAIN but the problem is finding an ISP that is up to date enough to offer Windows hosting with ASP.Net Core.
99% the issue is Mweb (or wrong password, ie amother device somewhere perhaps on the network, laptop or second pc maybe with bad credentials)

How they (mweb) still exist is beyond me. They have the weirdest firewall and man in the middle routing going on its just silly.

Move her to a different ISP. (you already explained Mweb is the variable.)

Would be useful if OP indicate if he was correct or wrong.

If wrong, then the decent thing is to clear your reputation as a business.

If right, you need to make amends

Any update on the epyc firewall ?
Howdy - we identified routing issues at IS after performing a fail over to our secondary firewall and have reverted back to primary. Busy diagnosing with IS

Best to log a ticket if you haven’t already done so

Azure was not cheap the last time I checked, definitely not in small business budget but I'll check again.
Didn't know AWS had local presence, worth looking into.

Yes, you are right, Azure is expensive, but it is very easy to use for .net developer. This is advantages using their platform, it is not too efficient for startup company. I have tested them in the past and it almost cost me around $70/month until I found other Windows VPS alternative. I found Asphostportal and it can cut down our cost to around $35/month. Honestly, Azure provide more functionalities but if you don't use too much features, I believe that Asphostportal should be enough. You can purchase Asphostportal Windows VPS and it has come with SQL server installed.

I tried to Sign up this Morning with Absolute Hosting, Thought i would try them out, to save me from spinning up an Azure VM. Could not get past the signup page, due to a system error and the Support Chat was not prepared to assist, in making an alternative arrangement. by the time I was finished waiting for them to sort themselves out (still waiting), I was able to spin up a Azure instance, and an AWS instance. Azure is expensive, but at least it works.

Hi Gary,

Im sorry for the inconvenience experienced by the SMS delays to your mobile number to verify your new sign up.

Delays like these are out of hands and the team were trying their best to assist, how ever all new clients must pass validation by providing the OTP that is sent to them.

I understand, but a Phone Call or Email could have also worked. If you cannot adapt and work the problem, then I cannot host mission critical apps with you. If you cannot adapt to a SMS delivery fail because its out of your hands, then how would you adapt to Eskom or your Backup generator running out of fuel ? This is such a stupid thing that cost you a client.

I've taken another look at the chat that you had with Rhio and at no point did we ever state that we were unable or unwilling to assist.

We had no idea that you had not received the OTP until when you logged onto chat and when you did, you were asked to submit a support request so that the matter could be investigated and escalated - and you stated that you did not have the time for that and would look else where.

If we've lost a client because of that then Im sorry for that.

why must i waste my time, redoing a support request when I had a live person you could have just copied the chat, Most company's, don't wait for the client to give solutions, the Job of the support agent is to work the problem and give solutions, like "we could try something else, if you dont mind" but its cool, I wish you the best of luck, you just wont be getting my business.

Hi Gary

I wanted to provide an update on the matter in order to provide clarity and transparency.

I took a further look into the logs with BulkSMS and can see that both attempts to send you an OTP were blocked upstream hence you did not receive any of the OTP's that were sent out.

Im more than willing to log this with BulkSMS if you like and get to the bottom of this?

Again, I apologize for the inconvenience

Regards

Jade

"up to date enough to offer ASP.NET"

My two cents' worth is that I have several .NET web sites hosted at Absolute Hosting (most with MS SQL) and I've always found their service and response to be outstanding. In fact, I even moved two sites from different hosting companies to Absolute Hosting. Some (not all) of these sites also use email via Absolute and it works fine. I wrote a blog about my experience with Absolute a few years ago ... see www.paulkilfoil.co.za/Blog-20171022.aspx (and no, I'm not employed or being paid by them, I'm just an independent software developer working with small and medium-sized businesses).

Thank you for the kind words TravelBandit. It is very much appreciated and it is always good to hear that a client is happy with the services they receive. I hope you will stick with us for many more years to come.
