-> it's primarily a work machine, but i'd like to play the occasional game of gta sa or hl2 on it too.

does this sound reasonable for the price? i'd really like to squeeze it down to as close as R10k incl. as possible - can i do better?

thoughts?

What brand is it? Maybe a touch too expensive if you ask me but its specs are definately good. I would rather go for a centrino though

it's a Eurotek D47EV (http://www.eurobyte.co.za/laptops_d47ev.htm).

why would you opt for a centrino? surely the processing power isn't as good?

i'm not too concerned with battery-life, since it's just a machine i'd be transporting between home and work.

As far as i know the centrino(pentium m) works similarly to the AMD's. Its not How many megahertz that counts its how you use them :D ie more punch/mhz.
Its battery life is also way better. Try go for acer also, not so sure about eurotek

As a reference regarding price, use the configurator on the Dell site to build a similar machine, and compare the prices. Dell is, IMHO, one of the best available these days, and their service is quite good as well.

it's made by clevo/kapok=you take your own chances.

I agree with Burley on the processor. Also your USB ports are 1.1 protocol whilst most USB components now rely on USB 2.0.

Toshiba, Acer, Proline, Asus, Dell etc would be my recomendation over the Eurotek.

well, i finally managed to build a system that looks simliar to what i'm interested in on dell: http://tinyurl.com/b2578

i tried the ZA site and saw that they don't supply any of the inspiron range. how annoying.

if anyone can find me a better/more sensible offer, i'd appreciate it.

is it for work or play? or both

because 17 inch laptops are not good for carrying around u get alot of problems if its mobile

toshiba p30 i tink its called is good

why do u want p4 laptop get a 15" acer or hp much cheaper
and buy centrino

yes, i think it's silly to get hung up on screensize.

-> both work and play.

second that!

i have an compaq (hp) nx7010 (wide screen) with centrino (m) 1.6GHz. just put in a gig 'o mem and your set! i can play UT2004 on my laptop at fairly good res without any problems.

when working on it, battery lasts 4-5hours. when playing, it lasts 2-3 hours.

i would go for an acer though, compaq is not worth the extra $

are you guys referring to the travelmate series? how do the prices compare given my specs?

mate....

like they all say, go for a name brand. I work for a reseller in the UK and we only supply HP, Dell, Tosh, Acer - never have probs with them and after sales service is great......just see if you can afford the 3 year on site warratey - I would by that over large RAM and HDD and buy them later IMHO...

Keep clear of Mecer, Incredible Corruption and that lot (just my opinion) and go for most centrino and memory you can get for your bucks.

good luck

I would make sure you buy a system that comes pre installed OS and as mentioned before 3 year onsite next business day fix......
