Looking for a sub-notebook - 14" screen with the latest quality hardware that I can find.
Don't really want to get a Ipad purely because I don't want to complete a masters on a pad...

I have a budget of 7K (student)
Can anybody recommend some brands that I can trust?

Links would be appreciated.

Thanks
C

Brands you can trust:
Lenovo(IBM),
HP,
Dell,
Samsung,

In no particular order. I don't like HP's Compaq's and I stay away from Acer.

HP's local tech support sucks big time so I'd scratch them TBH, however you have the warranty, but sell it before that's up ;)

I'd stay away from Lenovo. Every damn model has the same issue: broke left hinge, google it.
Now its in repairs, been almost a month and I still havn't received my laptop

There are only 3 brands I'd buy: Dell, Samsung and Toshiba

Oooh, I can't believe I forgot Toshiba. Toshiba is by far my favourite all time Notebook maker. I have had endless hours of pure joy from my old Telkom Satellite Toshiba L4 edition, until it was obducted. I haven't had any defects on that Toshiba in the 2 years I owned it and adding a fast Patriot RAM upgrade to it made it purr like a tiger.

I really can't express enough that my Toshiba Laptop was the one device and only device I loved more than anything in my life.

Lenovo isn't that bad. My girlfriend has a Lenovo and the hinges are fine. I've had no issues with it so far.

I always thought these brands comparison comes down to a per user experience.

I try best to push users on brands they trust instead of scaring them into the unknown however sometimes when they feeling adventurous do you get away with selling them another brand.

My advice is go into a chain store (Game, Dion Wired) plenty of display units and have a hands-on feel with them to get an idea of the investment you are about to throw down money on.

Tell us if you have used a brand before that you felt comfortable with, this surely can help make the decision a little easier :)

just my 2bits worth :D

Agreed. In the end the parts are pretty much the same and unless there's a big problem that needs a recall I don't think there's much of a difference other than design etc.

I mean, Asus haven't been mentioned once, but I'm doing all my work on my Asus and haven't had one problem with it thus far. It's also got a very nice keyboard to type on and extra apps installed that is actually worth it (Even Alice Greenfingers). They've also got great support as they are so involved in the SA market. Their laptops are also cheaper than others and comes with the same general specs.

Some sub R7000 options below.

Asus X42JE-VX (14" screen) (2 years warranty pick and return)

Sony VAIO VPC-YB15 (11.6" screen) (1 year carry in warranty)

Lenovo EDGE NVY3PZA (11" screen) (1 year carry in warranty)
Lenovo EDGE 0578-P6G (14" screen) (1 year carry in warranty)

MSI X350 (13" screen) (slim series) (1 year carry in warranty)

Dell Insprion Duo convertible tablet PC (10.1" screen) 3 year next day warranty
This laptops has a keyboard but can flip round to serve as a tablet.
