notebook with good build quality

Thanks everyone for the suggestions.

I am a big fan of Lenovo, and I was looking at the T440s, or the X1 carbon, but is there a store in the PTA area that sell them, as I want to test them out first before spending that much on a notebook, as with the mac, they do not come cheap.

I know very little about fujitsu notebooks, but will check them out. I have only seen the very low end ones.

ah, thanks. I see a lot about Linux in the spec sheet, which I definitely like.

Even has Corning Gorilla Glass 3 for durability.

This looks really nice as well, I will go over the specs of this one too, and that is not bad in terms of price.[/QUOTE]

The model from my supplier has the following specs

Thanks for the specs. Definitely a reasonable price for that actually.

usb10/100 lan ? Is this network over USB or is there just a space missing?

Yeah it is. Doesn't have an ethernet port. Comes with a USB adapter. Because Wifi is everywhere, like the macbook

ok cool, thanks, so the same way the macbook uses a thunderbolt adapter. Makes sense, as it enables the to make it thinner.

Are toshiba quality notebooks yes or no. Looking at spending about R15 grand, company will reimburse me 40 % of the total as they don't want to purchase notebooks any more.

I have seen some good ones around, but their importer back when we used to sell them in 2008 was Mecer, dunno if that means good or bad for you, and of course, that could have changed in recent years.

The quality of notebooks of today look cheap(plastic/materials used), not like back in the good old days. This notebook I am currently using is probably 5 years old but starting to give me problems and don't wanna replace the hard drive/fan etc

Would rather buy a new notebook - something that can last 3 - 4 years without failing on me

I have a Dell XPS and it is a very robust machine. Came with an i7 CPU and 16Gb RAM. 2 year on site warranty as well, which I have used once to replace a dodgy speaker out socket

I would stay away from dell, their build quality is shocking. Only thing they do that is quite solid nowadays is Alienware. Lenovo starting to do some cool stuff.

What bull. I use an XPS 15 and 13 daily and recently sold my XPS 12 which I am trying to get back.
Best built machines I have owned in a long time.

I would love a dell XPS, but as you said, how on earth to get hold of one. I know a lot of guys that swear by Dell XPS. The regular dell machines I agree, are not that great.

I think I am pretty much sold on the Asus, once I compare the specs and price with a 13" mbp. Do you know of any stores that sell these? I haven't found one with the backlit keyboard. If I have to buy it cash, it will only be in about 2 months time though.

Carbonite is where I get mine. Premium machines at bargain prices. Have to be patient though.

I sent you a quote, via PM, that I received for an XPS 13 recently from Westech Systems. Unfortunatley, it's still quite expensive. Would probably be cheaper to import an XPS 13 Developer Edition yourself.
