Does anyone know of notebooks available with the serial port for Router connectivity? Or are people just using USB-Serial adapters?

Notebook with RS-232 port

Try the Dell Latitude Range, they still seem to have serial ports on-board. If you do not come right then USB-Serial adapters are the only way to go.

Regards

Unless the notebook is either
a) very old
b) Used specifically for technical applications where RS232 is required
I think your only option would be a USB adapter. Some of the adapters are finiky especially on vista, but XP seems to be ok.

Thanks guys, have ordered with an adapter that apparently works fine, cheers.

Notebooks with serial ports are normally on the higher end of the scale, but those USB - RS232 ports works quite well. One note thought, if you need to use hyperterm, the coms port tends to change (some feature of the USB spec), so if the first connection on Port1 doesn't work, change to Port2, or whichever the USB drivers have assigned it. But it works well on routers and other serial devices. I want to think there's a PCMCIA version as well

Me experience with the varying COM port numbers is that the COM port number stays the same for each USB port. So the mapping might be USB1-COM4 USB2-COM5 etc.

The serial port was one of the requirements when I ordered my laptop.

I ended up with a HP compaq nx9000

Not bad..for its time
