So I finally got my PC yesterday and of course there is a problem. I can't seem to get my monitor working with HDMI. It works with a VGA to DVI output but not HDMI. I don't know if I am doing something wrong or if there is a technical issue.

I first had it connected with the VGA to DVI, but then plugged in HDMI and nothing. I removed the VGA cable and still nothing. Whats weird though is that it makes a sound, when I plug it into my Graphics Card, so it must be detecting it. Btw I am changing the monitor video input to HDMI. I plugged in my monitor with the same HDMI cable into my laptop and it worked.

I got a feeling it is something simple, but for the life of me I can't figure it out. You guys got any ideas?

Please take note that HDMI DOES NOT provide an analog signal, so you CANNOT convert VGA to HDMI or vice versa.

DVI however, does provide both digital and analog signals, but some DVI ports doesn't supply analog signals either.
 
What happens when you use a Digital signal is that it usually picks up the monitor's resolution and refresh rate itself, rather than using manual settings, like an Analog signal does. So what can happen is that the PC might be setting a resolution and/or refresh rate that is out of range of what the monitor can do.

You could try installing drivers for your particular monitor.

Pada im not trying to convert VGA to HDMI, so unfortunately that isn't the problem =/

Rudimental don't think that is the issue because the monitor actually says "No Video Input".

I was thinking it might be on the PC side, am I suppose to change any settings?
 
A DVI-DVI / HDMI-HDMI cable that goes from the card to the screen should work 100%.

Perhaps your operating system isn't detecting the card/screen correctly?

Have you tried connecting it to a different screen?
 
No I can't, unless I buy a DVI cable. Right now I am using the VGA-DVI adapter that come with my Graphics card.

Pada, I did buy a HDMI cable, it isn't working. I have tried connecting to both my screens. What is even weirder is that when I go to Screen Display options. for both my Graphics card Controller and Windows 7, it displays two Screens connected. This may be because at first I tried connecting one screen with HDMI and the other screen with VGA-DVI, but I have disconnected the VGA-DVI screen since and it still displays that there are two.
 
Your best bet is connecting through VGA for now and then buying a DVI cable. Strange that your screen didn't come with one... That's why I buy Samsungs ;)
 
Ye that explains why Philips is cheaper, these bloody cables cost R150-R200. As a last resort i'll get a DVI cable, but would rather get this working seeing as both my monitor and my graphics card support HDMI and as I said before these cables aren't cheap at all.
 
Nicko: just take note that just one of those 2 DVI ports will allow you to use a DVI->VGA adapter, which is the bottom (DVI-I) one.

Usually the screens come with VGA-VGA and DVI-DVI cables. I actually don't even know where you'll get a DVI-DVI cable, since they should be included with the screen in the first place.
 
Computer Mania sell both DVI and HDMI cables. But I'd rather not use DVI because HDMI allows audio to be sent as well, and my monitor has speakers.

My second graphics card is arriving today, so I can test if it is the graphics card that is the problem.

I'll see if I can get you a DVI cable if it's not GPU so you can test. I also get full HDMi 1.4 cables at a decent price.

Thanks stroebs for the offer, but I'm already getting a DVI cable so its fine.

UPDATE on what is happening, I have managed to get it displaying, but it only works on 1080i 30Hz and whenever I change it to 1080p or 60Hz it goes black. Weird... I know
