I've had a problem for years with Windows XP (SP2 and SP3) where I have to repeatedly refresh the Microsft Update page after clicking "Custom" until eventually it shows me what updates are available. It gets stuck at the "Checking for the latest updates for your computer..." page, and just continues that way until I exit. I've had this problem on numerous PCs now, and can't find anything about it on Google. Anyone else had this problem, and found a way to solve it?

Are you using Internet Explorer when you do this?

You're not trying to update while using Firefox are you?

I know it's an obvious question but just checking...

Is your copy of Windows "legal"?

Only IE opens the update.microsoft.com site. If I try opening it in Firefox I get a message telling me I need to have IE 5 or later.

Yup - legal copy of Windows. Been validated using the validation tool and all that.

Wouldnt have this problem if you were using Ubuntu

I used to have a similiar problem but it always resolved itself after a refresh or two.

Why not try using firefox (its a much better browser) and direct yourself to this page for updates: http://windizupdate.com/whyuse.php

Ironically, you wouldn't have this problem if you were using Vista either. :p

Anyway, I don't think the Windows Update website likes you using a proxy to connect to it. Maybe that's an issue?

try clearing your cache and all your prior download data.

disable all other plug-ins for Internet Explorer.

also make sure you are using the latest version of flash and java.

Can flash and java also cause these types of problems

I'm not sure if the MS update uses an flash or java... probably only ActiveX... but updating them won't hurt, esp. if it is causing some incompatibility.

I am thinking the windows is legal but in a illegal way.If the wpa patch was patched in the registry and it no longer works due to a servicepack install,it might also cause this to happen.DONt ask me how i know that.

that is a possibility...

AND... some legit installation keys have also been blacklisted before... where someone has copied down the key and used it before the sale of the software.
