I have 'inherited' a Novatel U730 (at minimal cost) under the impression it would work in SA. From what I can tell, the U730 and U740 are the same cards, more or less, just the U730 is directed to the USA and the U740 is directed to Europe. And I know the U740 is the Vodacom choice here.

I've never tried a 3G connection before, so I bought myself a Pay-as-you-go starter pack, loaded up with a 500MB data bundle, downloaded the lastest Vodafone VMC install (v9.2.1.6545) from the Vodacom website, and tried to get it all going. In theory the cards is an HSDPA card, and should support GPRS, EDGE, 3G and HSDPA. The only available connections I can find is GRPS however.

Can anyone help me on this? Any tips or suggestions? I'm not sure if the card itself (being the U730) won't work above GRPS in SA, or if it's the Pay-as-you-go sim, or something else entirely. Did I waste my money on a bum deal? :(

It is made for the North American Market and only supports HSDPA/ UMTS in the 850/1900MHz frequency band. The U740 supports HSDPA/ UMTS in the 2100 Mhz band (which we use locally)

It can only be used for GPRS/EDGE locally.
