Did this exercise recently, we ended up getting bargain on the 1.8 Chev Utility UTE editions for R144k ex VAT, was cheaper than their 1.4 Sport model!

Chev is a better option. I've been in the market for this type of vehicle for more than a year and have researched it extensively.

The NP200 base is much cheaper than the Chev base but it excludes the safety extras.

Nissan charges 10k more or so for a safety pack to add on airbags that come standard with the chev

Do you want the bakkie as an everyday car that put surfboards in on the weekend, or a workhorse that you load up everyday?

If it's for weekend recreation, get the Chev. It has a much better set of features, and will be nicer to drive.

The NP200 is a tool. It has a bigger load box which is also rubberised. The NP200 can carry 800kg, and I have carry loads close to that before. The short 1st and 2nd gears are great. The bakkie is slow, but I drive the 8v version not the 16v one.

If you want diesel, you'll need the NP200, as I don't think that GM has any 1.3 UTEs left.

We got a Chev 1.8 club last year which seemed to be the bargin. Looking at the models now the 1.8 UTE Force for R169100 seems to be the best bet although i don't care for the stickers. The UTE is okayish, not amazing, but it is beter than the Nissan if you are going to be driving it yourself. The only time I would pick the Nissan over the UTE is if somebody else was going to drive it and it was to be used as a tool on a work site only.

When you buy a bakkie there are some essential extras that put another R20k onto the pricetag:

Sliding rear window R1500
Rubberising the back R1800
Rubber mat R800
Canopy R6500-R10000
Spraying the canopy(Unless bakkie is white) R3000
Towbar R2000
