Heya

I have to remove windows xp from a pentium 3 and put windows 98 back on. How do I move from ntfs to fat ? I have done it once before but cant for the life of me remember how. Please help :)

You need to take everything off the Drive, Then format it using the windows 98 CD as a Fat32 Disk. Easy.

The general hardware and software section seems to have become south africas online tech support. Evolvement of myadsl? I don't believe in evoloution :(

Anyways, go to this link
http://www.dehning.com/download/utilities/bootdisks/boot98.exe
Download the utility and put a stiffy in your stiffy drive
Run the utility, it should create a windows 98 startup disk for you to use.
That utility is for Win98OEM, so here's the link for hte other versions
http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm

After you created the startup disk, put it into the pc you want windows98 on.
Go into the pc's BIOS, by pressing F2 and or DEL or ESC, depends on the BIOS
Make the first boot device the A: drive and the second boot the hard disk, third boot cd-rom. Save settings and exit.

Leave the stiffy inside, wait for it to run. Choose start pc with command prompt (not with cd-rom support)
After it started type fdisk and press enter. You have to figure out fdisk by yourself, it's too much information to type. The only thing you should remember is to delete the ntfs partition and create a full 100% FAT32 partition.

Steps:
1. Delete NTFS partition,
2. Create FAT32 partition at 100% disk usage (unless you want two partitions)
3. Restart pc, let the stiffy run again (choose command prompt(or dos) again)
Type format c: /u and press enter. if u doesn't work, just use format c:

Wait for it to finish format.
4.Restart pc

Let stiffy run again, choose start pc with cd-rom support, after it loaded type in d:\win98\setup.exe and press enter.

Let windows setup commence, I did this all out if my head, been using xp since it came out, so forgive any mistakes.

Blah Blah Blah Blah... nice one btw, but its easier to just to backup the software with XP on another drive that's allready formatted as FAT32, then insert your bootable Win98CD and let rip.

and all honesty, if people don't know how to do this on their own, they shoulnt be told how to do it.

I think he wants to keep the data on the drive in which case id suggest partition magic to convert then booting up with that 98 disk and using deltree to remove everything except the data to keep... otherwise you'd just format using the 98 cd
