I get this message during boot. I've managed to locate the file and have it replaced with the original version, same error. I've also ran chkdsk/p during XP repair still nothing' also tried a full Windows repair and same error. Virus scan came clean. Used Hirens boot to recover partition, no go. Wtf, can someone advise?

is it booting from the correct device?

In the XP recovery console, try 'fixboot' and fixmbr'

This normally happens when the virus that infected your system has been removed? Noticed your system is much faster?

Try this

Click on Start
type msconfig
under startup look for the filename
untick it if it exists.

If this doesn't work then i will look for another solution unless another forumite helps you out before that happens :)

I cannot get into Windows, the error is just after post...

Get into DOS and use command to edit the boot.ini under your system drive (might need to change its property to normal first). The partition paremeter specified for you Windows folder in this file is incorrect thus lead to this file missing error.

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1) Change this highlighted number in sequence, save and reboot. Have you played around with your hard drive's partition recently?

Have you tried doing a repair install (bypass recovery console) of XP?

Wait of course you have..Could be the boot.ini is corrupt..Or possible your boot partition isn't active?
