@OP an NUC is not a bad option. I have one and love it merely because I can do a lot of other stuff with it other than just watching movies.

Is it though? You're spending time to maintain and update everything. There's the NUC cost vs just buying a cheap Android TV stick for R1k, extra HDD costs, electricity costs since the thing runs all the time etc. etc. It all adds up.
 
I don’t care about the couple of cents that gets added to my electricity bill a month.
I already have the NUC and the hard drives.
I spend as much time maintaining and updating as to have no impact on me financially.

I think for someone starting scratch, the android stick and seren and alldebrid is a no brainer.
