Number Porting from Vodacom to MTN

Hi All,

I've just been told by Vodacom that I can upgrade my contract(As of 30 Jan), however I would like to take out an MTN contract that I'm interested in, but still keep the same 082 Vodacom number.

Does anyone know the process of doing this? Do I need to notify Vodacom first, or can I go directly to MTN? Is there anything else I should know? etc.

Well you're going to have to wait the full 24 months, then a month before you're 24 months is up you call vodacom tell them you want to cancel you're contract with them and can they put you on pre-paid as you'd like to port your number across.

Thats what I had to do when porting from CellC to MTN.

Is the MTN network and service better than Vodacoms? My contract is up and I want an iPhone 4S however Vodacom have no stock for the next 2 weeks at least where as MTN have stock right now. Is MTN a better network in terms of 3G coverage in Johannesburg and customer care?

When I ported from Vodacom to MTN I didn't have to change my contract to prepaid first.

Not sure I'd recommend anyone change to MTN personally. Their network is particularly not great. I find I'm on EDGE in a lot of places where my Vodacom BB is on 3G/HSDPA

In my opinion the coverage is about the same. I am mainly on MTN, but their data counter and billing are normally a mess. Vodacom is better in that regard in my opinion.

I find I'm normally on edge or gprs with Vodacom in most places where MTN has 3g and in Jhb I always find Vodacom 3g to be far slower than MTN (or Cell C or 8ta). I'll be porting to any other network later this year.

I ported from Vodacom to MTN about 2yrs ago and it wasn't a problem at all. My Vodacom Family Top Up contract had ended and MTN had a nicer phone for the same price, so i took their contract and kept my 072 number without any hassle.

I must admit though that i have found Vodacom to be the better provider. MTN isn't bad, they're just not quite as good as Vodacom from my personal experience. I have 3G signal on my Vodacom phone alot more than i do with my MTN one too
