Numsa would press on with a demand for an outright ban on the export of scrap metal to protect South African production, the union said in Johannesburg on Thursday.

General secretary Irvin Jim said the union was pleased that there were some signs that the economic development department was taking their demand for the control of scrap metal exports seriously.

It also welcomed the preferential pricing system as a way of prioritising South African consumption of scrap metal.

"...We nevertheless reaffirm our view that an outright ban on the export of scrap metal is the only truly effective mechanism to protect South African production and further our objectives of growing industrialisation."

This stance followed its first central committee meeting of the year, held from Monday March 4 to Thursday.

Would this not also curb the export of stolen cables and copper to China?

would be a good thing if we actually made sure we had enough production capacity to be able to use the metal.

We have that and more. Some of our scrap smelters are sitting idle simply because the Chinese are paying top dollar for scrap. Its MUCH cheaper to process scrap than it is to mine new material. If we put our own scrap to use we will bring down the cost of locally manufactured goods versus sending it to china and their goods becoming cheaper.
