The R is for Ray Tracing. That's what they are marketing now.

Not sure I see that as good enough reason to rebrand though. Ray tracing is nothing new, most people don't know what it means and it sounds much more like a workstation GPU.

I think that it will radically change the image quality we see over the next few years. Right now, the pipeline tools and artists still have to catch up. Real global illumination, accurate reflection/refraction/participating-media and "infinite detail" procedural geometry, etc. will eventually work its way into the mainstream via ray-tracing. Even though the concept has been around since long before PCs, the jumps from dedicated hardware are huge (previously it always lagged behind forward rendering as "too slow to be a replacement").

I remember that back in the early 2000's 1M rays/sec was considered good on a CPU (massively lagging forward rendering hardware though), and now it's 10000x that with this new dedicated hardware and the current GPU architectures. I expect the dedicated hardware probably only added a ~2x multiplier, but still. It will be amusing to see if the fixed function units get dropped over the next 5-10 years (Intel Larrabee - 20 years ahead of it's time :) ).
