Personally, i think this is just asking for trouble...

New York officials have unveiled a revised design for the skyscraper that will replace the World Trade Center, following fears over security.

The Freedom Tower is being built on the site of the Twin Towers destroyed in the 11 September 2001 attacks.

Architects redesigned it after police expressed concern that the 1,776-foot (540-metre) building could be vulnerable to truck bomb attacks.

Under new plans it is further from the road and has a strengthened structure.

The redesign calls for a concrete and steel pedestal, clad in ornamental metalwork, and topped by a tower of glass.

The building is capped with a mast incorporating an antenna, which is meant to evoke the torch of the Statue of Liberty.

Well. the US has to build it again - the WTC were a symbol of wealth and power. It would be more disastrous for them NOT to build it again than leave it as it.

Remember Americans are probably the most patriotic on earth ;)

Thats true...

but rebuilding it to make it the tallest building in the world is just asking someone to blow it up...

Americans...

Of course there are going to be strong security and AA guns somewhere around that area.

It won't be the tallest building on Earth. The Taipei 101 building is currently the tallest at 506m, and the new Burj Tower in Dubai will be 800m tall when completed, and is scheduled for completion before the Freedom Tower as I understand. Several other buildings that are close to 600m tall is also being built around the world. The tallest structure on Earth, if it is built, will be part of a solar power plant in Australia and it will stand 1km tall.

Just some bits of useless trivia.

funny... in the old days terrorists used ak-47's now they use 747's
painfully true...
i think it's a good thing (the building) - an act of defiance against those responsible for 9/11

There is now a small military base in manahatten island which has SAM capabilities

IMO the odds of terrorists trying to blow up the NY WTC again are very slim. There are plenty much easier targets where 'bang for the buck' is very high too, e.g. subway trains. It seems obvious that you 'strike when/where your enemy least expects it'. Everyone is so obsessed now with airport security and protecting the rebuilt WTC blah blah, hardly anyone is worried about targets like trains or packed stadiums or malls, or even any other 'random tall building' --- if you were a terrorist, what would you do?

I agree, I was watchin this thing on Nat geo channel last night and they say that the terrorists have found a new way to cause havok. They pack tons of explosives on small boats and ram them into the huge supertankers carring crude oil causing a major oil spill

All nice and stuff - but would you actually pay $50 a Square metre for space on the 80th floor? I'd want them to pay me to work there...

Oh I don't know, I heard there's a great view of air traffic from up there ... :p

It will be the biggest building in the world...they will make it by the little pole they stick on top :)

/me cringes at that one...

Yeah - I know, it's still not PC to even go near a joke about it - give it 10 years ;)

The problem is, the attack is just made for jokes of the tasteless type - I remember when plans for a new WTC were announced, there were parody designs with a hole built into the building so planes could fly through it.

It's odd that some things become taboo to joke about, yet other horrific incidents don't.

Give it 40 years, those people might struck again!
Imagine if the blew down the statue of liberty.
the Emericans will certainly go to war!

Hehe, it would have to be one hell of a pole to make it more than 800m tall.
