Wellington - The captain of New Zealand's men's netball team choked to death in a freak accident while eating his dinner, reports said Wednesday.

Mike Siave collapsed in front of his wife Amanda on Friday as he was eating a meal at his Christchurch home, the New Zealand Herald reported.

It said paramedics failed to revive the 35-year-old and a coroner's report found he died of asphyxiation caused by a food blockage in his throat.

Amanda Siave said she and her two sons were still coming to terms with the bizarre death.

"He was fit and young. We just can't understand it," she told the Herald. "I can't believe it's real. It's such a tragic accident."

New Zealand men's netball association president David Pala'amo said Siave's teammates were "beside themselves" with grief.

"He was one of the best captains we've ever had," Pala'amo told the Christchurch Press newspaper.

"He had lots of respect from all the players. He looked after the young players coming through. He was a genuinely friendly person that looked after everybody."

Men's netball team? Haha.

You sometimes get these weird stories that seem plausible, but when you click on them and find out they where published on the 1st of April you realize it is an April fools joke. Stories like these should be republished on the 1st of April just to confuse people for fun :D.

Netball is a very highly regarded sport in NZ in fact I would say its the second most important sport there, after rugby.

And a Mens Netball team would be seen the same light as a SA women rugby team so for them this is very sad news, even when you think its a joke :)
 
Ignore Techne/Phrony. He reckons photosynthesis proves consciousness. Not worth choking on your oatmeal for...

Who said it was an April fools joke :confused:. I am just saying if this was published on the 1st of April people might actually mistake it for an April fools joke.

Sad news nonetheless.
 
Would've been chirpier if the headline were "NZ Ref chokes to death" ala Bryce Lawrence...

RIP Netball dude.

Similar to the guy choking on his food while in flight, this is sad.
 
Who knows, maybe he had lunch or dinner with family from South Africa, you know people that are experienced chokers. Maybe the poor chap just couldn't keep up with the family :D.

Sad story , shame. Must admit , I did a double take when I read Mens netball team Cappie ! Anyways , death is always sad.
