Hi all

I have a problem when downloading local NZB's that are either only a few hours old or very old. The files won't download at all during the day, but will download at full speed during the night from around 8:30pm - 6:00am. Is this normal? Could it have something to do with the retention, because these files might not have been downloaded for a while?

Any help is greatly appreciated

Sounds like shaping - you pulling it from a local ISP NZB server or from an overseas one?
From my experience, ISP's shape the hell out of the overseas News servers during the day.

and also the local SAIX News Server is shaped during the day/Business hours.

To Be Accurate... there is no such thing as a local NZB. Do you mean that you download the NZB from a local index site and then tried to grab it using one of the local News Servers like news.saix.net?

Was just about to say something along those lines. He's also confused about the difference between retention and cached/uncached.

Yes, thats what I mean, I downloaded the NZB from a local indexing site and then I grabbed it using news.saix.net. I apologize for my incompetence in these matters, I'm not really an expert when it comes to NZB's. Is there any ways to increase speed during the day/business hours?

Correct me if I'm wrong, retention is the number of days a news
provider keeps the uploaded files on their server before they are deleted. I don't know the difference between retention and cached/uncached though.

If u on telkom u can surf from 8-6pm. Outside of that you will get full speed. Sometimes the shaping doesn't kick in and u get full speed all day! Normal behaviour.

While a file is "retained", it will be cached. After say 7 days on news.IS.co.za, the file will be uncached and news.IS.co.za will pull the file from another server and cache it again, after which it is retained (retention period if you will) for x days.
