What is the benefit of a HD image over a x264 rip ?

I saw a Pixar shorts collection - 33Gb for the HD image and only 3.5gb for a 1080p x264 version.

Why would one want the HD image ?

I found the ones in question.
The HD image is the actual Bluray version.
The x264 is a 1080p x264 rip (compressed).

You'll certainly enjoy the x264 version just as much.

That's what I was thinking.

I can't see that I would get 10 times the enjoyment out of the HD image....

Well from a technical point of view, assuming you write it to BluRay and watch it on your 40" LCD, you won't see a difference between that and the 1080p.

I am also assuming it's a lot easier for the uploader to just upload an image of the bluray than have to also encode it (which takes time), especially the overseas guys with 50Mbit+ connections.

Probably.
But lol... not everyone, contrary to popular belief, has 50Mbps+ connections. It's an option, but not everyone bothers.

3.5 gb for a 1080p rip is a very low bitrate. It will be full of artifacts and crap. Most decent 720p rips are 5-6 gig...

The pixar shorts are a selection of "shorts" of around 5min each.
Checked the Amazon one... 54min.
I have these in 720p iirc.

Get the 720 i cannot spot many difference between 720 and 1080 in all honesty, can you guys?

Depends how close you sit to your TV. I generally won't notice it unless you asked me to compare them, I would easily be able to tell you which one was 1080p.

Movies encoded with x.264:

Anything decent at full 1920 x 1080 is bound to be a file of at least 8-14 GByte

Well i sit about 1m from my 46" and about 4m, too me the difference is not worth the extra bandwidth. I downloaded a few games of thrones 1080p and noticed nothing different.

Yep, I get everything in 720p unless its CGI animation (e.g. Pixar) or a very heavy effects driven movie (e.g. Avatar) - I find it looks a lot better.
