(Source: Touchstone Pictures)"We've asked for it back. We'll see how the Iranians respond" - President Obama

There is no question that a U.S. RQ-170 Sentinel stealth drone went down earlier this month. Although U.S. officials confirmed that drone malfunctioned and was missing "somewhere near Afghanistan", they refrained from suggesting that the high-tech plane could be in Iranian hands.

However, President Obama opened the floodgates yesterday at a news conference by stating that his administration had been in direct contact with Iran regarding the drone. "We've asked for it back. We'll see how the Iranians respond," stated President Obama.

Unfortunately for President Obama, there's likely no chance that Iran would be willing to give back the drone under any conditions to the U.S. government. This is a sentiment that is echoed by military analysts that feel that the U.S. is in no position to request the return the drone that went down in enemy airspace while on a spying mission for the CIA.

"Good luck with that. I think I read this really bad plot line in a cheap novel a few years ago. Life imitating art, or something like that," said Richard Aboulafia of the Teal Group.

"I'm a little puzzled as to why he even bothered," added Dan Goure of the Lexington Institute.

Even former Vice President Dick Cheney jumped on the bandwagon to call into question Obama's handling of incident:

I was told that the president had three options on his desk. He rejected all of them.

They all involved sending somebody in, you know, to try to recover it or -- if you can't do that, and admittedly, that'd be a difficult operation -- you certainly could have gone in and destroyed it on the ground with an air strike.

But he didn't take any of the options. He asked nicely for them to return it and they aren't gonna do that.

For his part, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said that his people have all the means to control the drone and that he considers it a gift from the U.S. according to CNN. "The North Americans at best have decided to give us this spy plane," said Ahmadinejad. "In the unpiloted planes, we have had many advances, much progress and now we have this spy plane."

American officials still haven't confirmed if the images shown on Iranian TV last week are those of the actual downed RQ-170 Sentinel.

weak!

Risking starting a war over a missing drone just before re-election time would be political suicide so of course he isn't going to do anything that could inflame tensions even more. Chances are he was just making a joke.

LOL please give me back my drone :D. I was thinking of posting this but it just makes america look bad and i would have been canned for it :D.

Wow they never cease to amuse me. First they deny it, now they ask for it back haha. They should also be in big trouble for flying in iran. They would declare war if iran was caught in their airspace.

To me it sounds like baiting iran, they want iran to get aggressive with them but so far iran has not said very much.

I agree, it's a pretty dumb move... but they did say they didn't expect Iran to respond favourably! :D

This is not.... "Sorry we kicked our Soccer ball into your back yard, can we please come and get it?" :p

Can't think why the Iranians would be willing to give it back after all the harsh criticism they have received mainly from the Yanks.

They are obliged to return it, though they can dismantle it if they wanted. China returned aircraft in crates, as did the USSR and other 'waring' nations.

If i may ask why would they be obliged to return it? Would the US give back an iranian drone if it crashed in their Territory? Actually how do you think things would unfold if iran was caught spying on say ummm israel?

Some arb Iran official said:

Retired U.S. Air Force Lt. Gen. Jack Rives, a former judge advocate general, said that the U.S. was within its rights to ask for the return of the RQ-170 if the aircraft accidentally strayed into Iranian territory.

"We're not at war with the Iranians," Rives said. "When we're in our current conditions with them, this was an accident, it was a malfunction, the plane went down, it was our plane, there is no question over that. So it's just a common sense request under international law."

He said Iran has an obligation to return the aircraft, assuming it was operating in either international airspace or western Afghanistan with the consent of that nation's leadership.

"They actually don't have a right to keep it, it's ours," he said. "It did land on their land, and if it caused damage we'd reimburse them for the cost of the damage, but in terms of who owns the aircraft, there is no question it's ours."

If it was in Iran intentionally, then it's a different story.

The original title is:

U.S. to Iran: Give Us Back Our Drone

The OP then insidiously changes it to:

Obama asks Iran for his drone back

Someone tell the OP, that the drone does not belong to Obama (has he tried to mislead you with), it belongs to the US government. Im curious as to why the OP decided to lie and mislead people with the title of this thread

Ummm obama is the leader, he asked for it back, sounds right to me.

I am sure it was discussed and obama said look let's ask them for it back. Who cares that we were flying illegally in their airspace and illegally spying on them, let's see if we can get it back.

Then you have no clue as to how the American government works. The president owns nothing.

Well deserved I say. The sooner that totalitarian regimes in Iran and Syria go, the better off the Middle East will be. Though I doubt there will be many american boots on the floor. Looks like they are providing intelligence to countries like Turkey and Qatar. I think they will eventually go in.

This is turning silly. Of course he is the representative of the US government and when he says 'my', he means belonging to the US. (English much?)
