Obama: US will go after ISIS 'aggressively'

The world must unite to fight terrorism and the United States can and will defeat Islamic State, U.S. President Barack Obama said on Wednesday.

Obama, speaking at a news conference with Argentina's president, Mauricio Macri, referred to Tuesday's attacks in Brussels and said: "The United States will continue to offer any assistance that we can to help investigate these attacks and bring the attackers to justice."

"We will also continue to go after ISIL aggressively until it is removed from Syria and removed from Iraq and is finally destroyed," he added, referring to Islamic State by an acronym.

I believe when they send ISIS weapons they target "moderate rebels" yet invariably it ends up in ISIS hands

To their credit they've either stopped the weapons-to-moderates thing or they're keeping it quiet enough that it isn't in the news AFAIK, they should keep it that way.

It is still somewhat hypocritical whenever a US official speaks of fighting ISIS knowing that they supplied many of the weapons used by ISIS (accidentally or not, the irony remains) and their allies are accused of worse: directly supporting ISIS. While Russian weapons undoubtedly find their way to ISIS too, AFAIK Russia never spent USD500 million to train and equip moderates that vanished into thin air?

Russia's allies in the region also generally are fighting either ISIS or other "moderates" rather than actively supporting them, oh and then there's sanctions they implemented against Turkey, didn't see anyone else taking measures like that? (granted for the downing of a fighter more than anything else)

Look, nobody comes out a hero out of the mess that is Syria, not the US and not Russia, noone. It is however telling that a festering boil that has done nothing but grow for 4 years suddenly looks set to fall and there was only really one new player in the past year in terms of variables changing.

Whatever the motives and whatever the eventual outcome, Russia's involvement yielded them a generally positive result in public relations terms. More than a few mainstream outlets commending them for their resolve in withdrawing (however accurate it is) and their role in bringing the various parties to the table. The US appear to be doing some rational thinking right now, but they have a number of years of failed policy that is still too fresh in people's minds to call it a PR win for them too.

Russia has invested a lot in Assads army, an army that has had large parts defect through out this war to ISIS and other groups.

I dont know if Turkey is actively supporting ISIS, its possible but as you say we only hear about this stuff after a Russian plane has been shot down. It smacks of a propaganda campaign.

Dont get me wrong, US campaign against ISIS and the policy in Syria has been schit. The fact is a lot of countries are responsible for the current mess in Syria. Most ME countries, many Europeans ones, USA and Russia. And of course Syria itself.
