President-elect Barack Obama wants to renew the U.S. commitment to finding al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, according to his national security advisers.

Osama bin Laden remains on the run despite a $25 million reward for his capture.

The Obama team believes the Bush administration has downplayed the importance of catching the FBI's most-wanted terrorist because it has not been able to find him.

"We will kill bin Laden. We will crush al Qaeda. That has to be our biggest national security priority," Obama said during the presidential debate on October 7.

But tracking down bin Laden won't be easy.

In May, al Qaeda released an audiotape featuring bin Laden. But U.S. intelligence officials say they haven't had a solid lead on the terrorist mastermind's whereabouts since late 2001

Intelligence officials believe bin Laden is hiding in the tribal areas of northwest Pakistan, a remote and primitive region with mountain peaks as tall as 14,000 feet (4,270 meters) that make the terrain difficult to navigate.

I really don't get this.

Either Osama is long dead or they haven't ' really ' tried to find him.

The most advanced powerful country in the world ( ? ) with possibly the most advanced resources, who landed men on the moon, developed the A-bomb, etc after 5 years have absolutely no clue as to where a bearded old fart is located in a sparsely populated country.

If I was a conspiracy monger I would suggest that maybe finding him would create more problems than not finding him. Can you imagine trying to put him on trial ?

If I was a conspiracy monger I would suggest that they found him a long time ago and either smuggled him to Area 51 or spent a dollar on a bullet.

If I was a conspiracy monger I would suggest that if he is alive he has had plastic surgery, a haircut and is living as an Elvis impersonator in Kazakhstan.

Osama is buried in a shallow grave in the tribal border areas of Afghanistan and Pakistan IMO.

ROFL crush Al Qaeda. Who voted against the surge that crushed Al Qaeda in Iraq again. Eish:o

osama + xbox360 + cave in afghanistan = one very hard to find dude. He hardly comes out of his cave - that's why they can't find him.

It is very convenient to be able keep hunting for him forever.

Well maybe if the US's 'allies' actually let them do their job instead of shooting at them every chance they get.

In an interview with TODAY's Ann Curry, Zardari repeated Pakistan's objection to U.S. forays inside its territory. "I think if [the United States] let us tell you we're already there, we'll catch them," he said.

He said incursions were in violation of the U.N. charter. Asked whether Pakistan's military would use violence against U.S. forces, Zardari replied, "Whatever it takes."

With friends like Pakistan, who needs enemies, eh?

They never 'really' tried to find him. Took them 3 months to send troops to where they initially knew he was.

So they want to send men from Obama's barracks to go find where Osama bin hidin'?

Depends on how king the kingpin is. When going after a cell organisation it sometimes makes sense to keep the kingpin/symbolic leader alive so you can track his comms to the rest of the organisation and uncover cells/groups you wouldn't otherwise know about...

Problem is who is Al Qaeda? You can't exactly ask them to stand up and be counted.

Bin Laden 'deeply isolated'
14/11/2008 09:33 - (SA)

Washington - Osama bin Laden, deeply isolated and likely near the rugged Afghanistan-Pakistan border, has been forced to devote much of his energy to his own security while his Al-Qaeda terror network remains resilient, CIA Director Michael Hayden said on Thursday.

"He is putting a lot of energy into his own survival, a lot of energy into his own security. In fact, he appears to be largely isolated from the day-to-day operations of the organisation he nominally heads," Hayden said in a speech, referring to al-Qaeda.

The CIA chief suggested that bin Laden was hiding somewhere in the remote Afghanistan-Pakistan border region, where he said al-Qaeda has regrouped and bolstered its organisation.

Hayden described "the sheer challenge of surveying every square mile of that inhospitable and dangerous region", and said "part of the explanation for his survival lies in the fact that he has worked to avoid detection".

But he said hunting down bin Laden remains a high priority for the Central Intelligence Agency.

The CIA says he's still alive so he must be I guess, perhaps, maybe.

These are the same fellows who said there were WOMD in Iraq.
