CAPE TOWN - The South African Police Services (Saps) has introduced an intensified programme to tackle obesity among officers.

On a national level, a staggering 76 percent of officers are either overweight or obese.

Deputy Minister of Police Maggie Sotyu on Wednesday introduced the programme which seeks to prioritise the health and wellness of officers.

Sotyu said fitness levels within the police service were drastically low.

“You can’t have police officers with a 76 percent obesity. I mean, it’s not normal.”

Sotyu said the time to act was now.

“As the leadership of the police we need to do something because we can’t expect them to fight crime if we don’t look after their wellbeing. “

Substance abuse has also been identified as a major problem among officers

Saw one in the Tzaneen mall. Now besides from being a tall man, I have not seen so much fat inside a very large cop outfit. Not even the oros man was fat compared. my mouth hung open, I couldn't help staring.. He got quite aggressive about it... I just walked off a bit faster. He was one rounder away from being one of those fat people trapped in their house. I will, when there next time try and snap a photo of this lard ass.

Kubisile size. Every seam and button on the verge of exploding.
 
Didn't they have this fighting obesity campaign back when bheki cele was head honcho? And nothing came of it. Same will happen here.

Pigs will be pigs. I am slightly overweight and can outrun many a cop with ease. Not that I would need to. Just saying. I have heard that house robbers can jump clean over a 2 metre devils fork fence. Good luck to the cops in catching them.

We had that. Criminal scumbag jumped through the electric fence part. Didn't slow him down. Luckily the cop had a gun and shot the bastard.
 
They are actually obese so that if they are shot it will get stopped by the fat and not hit organs

They should make them walk the beat. It happens in every other country besides ours, you never see a SA cop walking in a city/town; its always them chilling in their car. This would make them both a bit fitter and more visible.

But they are all fat (at least until they lose weight which could take years of walking the beat). How will they catch crooks in the meantime without a mode of transport? 8 year old children could outrun most of them.

Yeah there definitely needs to be a fitness program as well, but thats not to say they can't both be done at the same time.
