OK, I've put up a speed test page on my domain, at http://rodent.za.net/speed/

It will request a speed test username (can be anything basically), do the bandwidth test, and store the results in a MySQL table. From the table, we can the draw a set of reports per username, IP and date/time to view any kind of trends in Sentech's bandwidth provision.

The speed test server itsself is hosted at Datapro, an ISP with pretty strong SAIX, and IS peering points. It will also give a good indication of what Sentech's peering strength is then at various times of the day.

I haven't drawn up a page to report the results yet, but will do that shortly.

I'd appreciate it if you people can run the test when things are good, and things are bad. This way we can get an "average" of Sentech's bandwidth.

Parse error: parse error, unexpected ')' in C:\vhosts\rodent\speed\index.php on line 16

if you click on "retest" after the test

/me scored 268 or something

Why do you have to "put your two cents in"... but it's only a "penny for your thoughts"? Where's that extra penny going to?

Ran you test and got 97kbs. Then went to tcp/IQ (Australia)and got 94kbs download. So it checks out.

Nice to be able to check locally and internationally

Seems to have a couple of small 'issues' in Firefox, while conducting the speed test it shows a whole bunch of "garbage" in the browser, but more seriously, after the test is complete it redirects to an incorrectly rooted URL: http://rodent.za.net/meter.php?kbps=116.9 (/speed folder is gone).

Rodent, how about also recording the City, TowerNumber and perhaps even the NodeB|Frequency (if known) in your bandwidth test database. From the posts on this forum it seems that many of the speed problems are related to the tower the user is connected to. So if you are going to be analysing bandwidth trends, these additions to your database would be useful.

I agree, that sounds like a good idea. If it's not too much coding but we may be able to get a good idea which towers are stuffed.

Thanks for this Rodent - it certainly has opened me eyes to the (lack of) bandwidth that is being supplied. On a 256k package I get on average high 50. It once spiked to 137, and has gone as low as 43.

I wonder if these low results are not because of wrong MTU settings. Would be good to have everyone input their MTU settings also. I am sure there is a correlation.
If you do not tweek your settings you will get low results

128kbs package
Therodent test = 219.9kbs (maybe I have been upgraded for not moaning[:D])
TCP/IQ download = 103.79
TCP/IQ uplaod = 74.86

Hmmm, yeah I also once got a reading of 177.4kbs on my 128k package. Mostly around the 130 -140 range though.

Wish I could figure out why it works for some people and not for others. Because even though it's working great for me now, you never know about next week! :)
