Oblivion Remastered - The Thread

One of the most anticipated Oblivion vids of all time haha :p. 89 year old Grandma Shirley is finally playing Oblivion Remastered. People have been waiting for and begging her to play. She has said she won't be playing it but she clearly changed her mind:

Love this!

"I need to check my notes guys" Hoping she has so much fun exploring and adventuring.

Watching her play Skyrim is fascinating and relaxing but can also be an extremely frustrating experience sometimes lol.

I love her vids though. So much better than young whippersnappers rushing through a game, never slowing down to just explore things. Hope she sticks with Oblivion for a long time but I have a feeling she'll give up and just play Skyrim again.

I've only watched the occasional video previously but was surprised that she is struggling with the Oblivion controls. I always go to settings to figure them out if I didn't remember from the tutorial. Also hoping she will stick with this series so I can follow along. Kinda hoping she doesn't pursue the main quests because I've enjoyed wandering around the world so much.

I've finally started the main quest again after completing most of the side quests!

Well she's so used to Skyrim's controls that she expects every game to be the same lol. Plus she has memory issues so for her it's much harder to learn and remember new controls than it is for you and me. Especially after her stroke. She forgets even the most basic things in Skyrim.

Anyway, I'm still not sure if I want to play the remaster. To me the original is perfect as is. Or I will wait till it's free or like R20 lol.

Shame, didn't know about her stroke and memory issues. I'm so impressed she games at her age and seems to love it.

You don't have Game Pass? I'm playing for "free" there. I think I feel differently about Oblivion Remastered because I never played the original, it will be a different experience for you but hopefully you would still enjoy it.

Yup, was a couple of years ago and she had to learn how to play Skyrim all over again.

I'm sure I would love the remaster but from what I've seen I don't like the visual change. Will stick with the original which def didn't need a remaster imo.

So Skyblivion is coming but also Skywind, a fan remake of Morrowind:

Humorous write up from PC Gamer, some quotes below:

Skyrim Grandma Shirley Curry has reached a new, impossibly powerful form. She has become Oblivion Grandma—Grandma Remastered, roaming the hills and dales of Cyrodiil with sprightly abandon.

Now she's branching out, getting menaced by conjurers, taking issue with UE5, and gradually falling in love with Oblivion.

Curry's second video sees her venture into one of the game's approximately eight bajillion caves, which is probably the exact wrong place to send the Skyrim Grandma if you're looking to convert her to a new game.

It's dark, brown, and labyrinthine, and I'm reasonably certain Curry's whole experience reaches its nadir when she's forced to reckon with the opaque and beautiful mystery that is Oblivion's lockpicking system, letting out a very aggrieved sigh as she grapples with it before eventually giving up and hitting auto-resolve (been there, grandma).

Just finished watching Grandma Shirley's second Oblivion vid and man oh man was it hard to watch lol.

Like when she's looting a corpse or chest etc, she think she's taking everything but actually she's not taking anything at all. Nothing. And she doesn't realize it.

And she doesn't know that she can change controls to whatever she wants in settings. Pretty much the very first thing any gamer does when starting a new game. Thought she would know about that stuff after all the years she's been playing Skyrim. Hopefully her son watches the vid and helps her out a bit because damn...

Possibly the most frustrating vid yet haha. But oh well, at least she's trying and learning. And I'm still hoping she'll explore the entire map and Shivering Isles eventually.

I'm only part way through the second vid and sharing some of your frustrations! I'm guessing if you only really play one game then the idea of changing settings is foreign. It's one of the first places I go to check the controls (and sometimes change them like you said).

I gave up on lockpicking, just never got the hang of it and went the auto attempt route. I understood how it works but couldn't get the timing right. Bought 30 lockpicks at a time from Shady Sam so had enough to spam auto attempt. Now have the Skeleton key and lockpicking is over 100.

Since she lives with her son and his family, I'm sure he can quickly help her to change the controls to match that of Skyrim. I think he's the one who sets up her computer and downloads everything, not sure.

And nah, lockpicking has always been easy peasy for me. Both the Oblivion and Skyrim versions. Got the hang of both pretty much on day 1. I even find the expert or master locks easy to lockpick :).

But yeah I guess for an almost 90 year old it's hard to understand. She also struggles with Skyrim's version.

Funny enough, I got the Skyrim lockpicking without any issues. Maybe I just don't have the patience for this one  Maybe I'll challenge myself to keep trying!

Haha you'll get better at it. Don't think she ever will because yeah in Oblivion it's all about timing and there's no way she will ever be quick enough lol.

I think at her age if you're still gaming, you get a free pass on things like the lockpicking mini-game

The lockpicking in Oblivion is not too bad except it maybe takes a bit too long. After 50hrs I don't really want to spend 30 seconds opening every chest (if doing it manually).

The Skyrim lockpicking was a lot faster.

The Fallout 3 lockpicking you mean

Grandma Shirley's 3rd vid is up and it's just her complaining about how much she hates the game for 40 or so minutes. I don't think she's gonna play it for much longer. She should just stick with Skyrim tbh. She's not doing herself or her channel any favours by continuing with Oblivion at this stage.

Even if they release ES6 tomorrow, she will hate that as well lol.

Today, 7 years ago, this teaser was released:

Can't believe it's been 7 years already. And still nothing else.

Yip, disappointing.

But after seeing Starfield... Hope they take all the time they need
