Occassional disconnect

I have a bad problem. My line speed is 192kb and I have signed up with cybersmarts 3gb account. Occassionally my connections just cuts off for about 15 - 30 min. This is especially bad when a file is downloading from sites like megaupload. And with a 3gb cap, I'm reaching nowhere fast. I assume this is Telkom's fault (isn't everything? lol:p)

What I'd like to know is will apps that supposed to keep your connection alive work (would they even stand a chance again telkom:( )
I suppose I should call telkom but I'm still sick from calling them day after day for 3 months waiting for installation.

Any hints?

Oh BTW I have one of those new Telkom Routers, the ADSL 5102G (I had to get one cos of compulsion) I never had any problems before though.
Spybot Search and Destroy picked up no junk.

Aaaahhhh!!!!!!!!!! It just happened now while I was typing this.

Sorry, I have no idea how to fix your connection. However, I have some advice.

I think it's time you got a download manager. E.g., look up WackGet at http://www.millweed.com/ (freeware). It lets you resume downloads if your connection goes down while downloading and uses next to no system resources.

Best of luck with the "real" problem though!

Thanks for your help Zapp. But I've got firefox installed with Flashgot and I've also got Flashget, Massdownloader and Hi Downnload. I usually use Flashget so if the connection dies then it will resume downloading as soon as connection s up again. But certain sites allocate a pasword for your download and if it is interrupted then *poof* wasted megs.

But what is especially irritating is the cut off when chatting or when IM'ing. Initially I'd type out like a retard "u there?" a dozen times or "another bot bites the dust" before realising that I was disconnected.

But thanks anyway.

About 99% of the time it's telkom's fault. I'm having the same probs now. Record is 59 disconnects a day (think modem was on for 10 hours). I know for certain it's a line fault but telkom still don't pitch up.

when you say disconnects I assume you mean drops line synch[synch light starts flashing]? If so check that the cables are all secure, try disconnecting all other devices from the line barring the router and see if it still happens. Could be a problem with line, the isp i don't think have control of synch, only network provider/dslam owner/telkom.

Also get that little prog, SASA and monitor when your last disconnect was before downloading, cybersmart sessions i think are 12hr long. Also check if the disconnect pattern is periodic. e.g. every hour etc. The isp can disconnect you but you line will not drop synch but the router will have to re-neg another session, some of which routers don't do it properly or is not set to reconnect.

ZeroSlice, how much have you downloaded on that account this month?

For May I plan to utilise only 3 gigs so I work on 100megs a day. So far my acccount read as 291megs downloaded. Why?

Because you used that much bandwidth? Bit of a silly question. Are you sure you haven't used 291 MB? Change your account/router passwords etc.

Changing the passwords........... will give it a shot. Not sure what you're asking with regards to the 291 mb. Even on this 192kB I managed to finish 3 gigs in 3 days:cool:

Yes, It seems as you've described it. Like I said I got one of Telkom modems. It's the new one and not the old one. At the time I couldn't get a billion or netgear and eager as I was to get back to broadband internet I hastened and bought this stuff.
On the it has two indicators, PPP and ADSL. Normally, PPP lights up first followed shortly by the ADSL at which I may now browse the internet. When it disconnects, both the PPP and the ADSL goes out.

All the wires are fine.
I just got back home and was really angered when those lights weren't lit. I tried to call Telkom but the department was closed. I''l try again on Monday. I'll send an email to cybersmart as well.

The disconections are irregular and as far as I can tell there is no pattern. Even the length of each disconnect is irregular.
I've already wasted a couple megs like this, not to mention my time. :(
I really hate this.......

Guys...if you have a modem that disconnects a lot...please upgrade the firmware on it to the latest version. 99.9% of the time old firmware is the cause.

Sounds brilliant, thing is I don't know where to find firmware updates for my modem, the Telkom ADSL 5102G. It's manufatured by 2c Telecoms (http://www.telkomphones.co.za/5102g.htm)

I couldn't find updates at telkom or at telkomphones.
Any suggestions?
