This is what OCSPD is supposed to do: https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/documentation/Darwin/Reference/Manpages/man1/ocspd.1.html

This should fix your problem:

Open Terminal:

sudo rm -rf /private/var/db/crls/*
sudo rm -rf /private/var/db/crls/.fl*

Those two commands will delete the temporary certificate revocation list (CRL) databases and should solve your problem. It seems like your system may have got corrupted somehow. On my MacBook that process runs at 0.17 CPU.

tried the above earlier - did not help !

right, i have created a new user account, logged out of my account & into the new account - problem gone, therefore isolated to my user account.

but what in my account is causing this ?

Did you try starting up in safe mode with your regular account?

yea, no difference.

**BUT***
i thought i would install little snitch to try figure out what was connecting to the net & gobbling data.

install did not go as planned - on restart after install, virtually everything was missing from the menu bar.
bugger that, i thought.
promptly uninstalled little snitch - but ran into an error (certain preferences could not be loaded or something to that effect).
continued with uninstall, rebooted & now OCSPD is gone !

I see where your problem is. You are using a Mac.

Turn off CRL & OCSP checking in the Certificates Preferences in Keychain Access.

also tried that earlier - with no effect

If was me, I'd restore from an earlier Time Machine backup well before the problem started. If you don't have a backup, then clean install on a small partition, transfer apps from the old partition and get all your bookmarks, contacts etc from iCloud. Copy docs, music etc manually across, delete the old partition and expand the new partition using Disk Utility. This method will prevent the faulty process being carried across.

Maybe it is time this kind of utterly helpless and destructive trolling comes to an end. Or maybe users of various platforms should do the same in Linux/Windoze threads and reduce the value of posting here to nothing.

/just saying...

Lazy copy paste.

Also do the follow:

Applications->Utilities->Keychain Access

In the window, click the Expires column to sort be expiry date and look at the certs that have already expired. It could be one of those messing with things. COULD BE - delete at your own peril.
