My facebook account has already been linked so. There seems to be a real issue though with new Facebook accounts not having any friends, using VPNs. Saw it coming years ago so it won't impact me.

Not sure why FB would randomly ban a person and reduce the likelihood of them spending money to zero.

You'd have a steam account to play steam games. A PSN account for PS games. An XBL account for XB games. A Nintendo account for Switch games. And so on, and so on.

I don't have a FB but have absolutely no problem with setting up an account purely for that reason. As long as they don't stop me using SideQuest and Virtual Desktop...

The problem comes in where FB has its own rules for allowing/banning people. In this guy's case he had to provide them with id/residence/etc, but their automated system just rejected his claim anyway, and after that there's no one you can talk to (except to raise a stink in social media).

They don't care about you and your few bucks, you're just another cog in their advertising chain.

sorry to nitpick but this isn't the same thing at all. Most of the consoles above do not require online accounts to play games, only to play online and purchase them, same goes for all peripherals you buy for machines, imagine requiring a Logitech Plus account just to use your new racing wheel, it's utterly ridiculous. I wouldn't have an issue if the FB account is only for interacting with the Oculus Store and whatnot but you are required to link an account to simply install and use your hardware, which I find completely disappointing given how great this piece of hardware is.

Personally, in the far future when I start getting into VR, I will definitely be voting with my wallet and paying extra for lease-less and open hardware like the Vive and Index, but of course, if one doesn't mind at all I won't judge anyone for going with the Oculus and linking accounts they already use and give consent to.

So the question everyone's wanting to ask. How do you sideload apps and p0rn? Is there a possibility of them picking this up and bricking your device?

Protips from a Quest 1 owner running wireless:

Don't bother spending money on the link cable, especially not the official pricey optical one, you're likely to stop using it after playing around with Virtual Desktop.
Thing is, for games that benefit from super-low latency, like Beat Saber, you'll be running them locally on the Quest anyway, and for stuff that needs horsepower like Google Earth VR and Half Life Alyx latency is a non-issue while using Steam VR.

Virtual Desktop works amazing and you're better off upgrading to a decent WiFi router if you have a crappy entry-level consumer one (something like the Ubiquiti Amplifi HD works amazing for me, 21ms latency) or you'd be better off getting a decent battery pack, something with decent capacity and a three-digit percentage indicator that can be used as a counterweight on the back of the headset.

Also important: You want a battery pack that has a button that starts the charging process. When the Quest reaches full charge it stops charging, of course, but that means unplugging it and plugging it back in when it gets low again, it's quite annoying if you don't have a button for it. Also, cables and power output matter, you want a proper type-c cable and battery pack that can handle 2.5-3amps, if you don't have that the charge level will keep dropping while you're using it.

The official elite head strap with the battery pack built-in is pricey and there are much cheaper options, but there's something about it that very few reviewers seem to mention: The battery pack on the official head strap properly communicates with the Quest 2, making it "one unit", so you can charge it while using it etc. I think that fact alone might make it worth it if you're someone using it for hours on end.

It's hard to overstate how incredible it is to use this thing wirelessly in the living room or outside on the balcony (or even in the garden provided it's cloudy so you don't risk exposing the lenses to the sun directly) while it's running SteamVR from my work PC.

I hope more people get into it, maybe we need a thread on MyBB where we can all share contact details for something like VRChat and do some MyBB meetups.

I'm waiting for these cables to be in stock again on takealot.
I've lost quite a few normal USB TypeC cables by someone accidentally knocking the protruded connector on the headset and murdering the metal contact on the connector.

SideQuest is a desktop app that takes care of all your sideloading needs. Super easy. It just needs the Oculus app installed on your desktop and a USB cable linked to the Quest.

As for p0rn, VR pron sites have a WebVR mode that opens the entire site in VR and allows browsing etc. through the main browser app. No apps needed.
For local videos, you don't need apps to watch VR prons, you can just download VR videos from any site and use the Oculus TV app to open them from local storage. Then switch the video to 180 degrees SBS or whatever mode.

It's all much less fiddly than I expected it to be.

Hook it up to your pc via link cable or virtual desktop? Steam games are only on desktop platforms, not the quest itself.
