OCZ Vertex 60 gig SSD

I see the 30 gig model has hit our local SA shores for around R2,200.

Anbody able to get stock locally of the 60 gig model and if so, for what confirmed pricing?

I'm told that it's not in SA yet.

Although much cheaper in the US, I'm not prepared to pay shipping, custom inflated VAT and risk the drive arriving DOA, which can happen with SSD's.

By the time you add all of the above on - there's not a huge price void.

Would rather pay a small premium at the end of the day and buy it locally with warranty.

What are the best SSD's available (preferably name the ones available in SA)
and how much do they cost?
are there stores that have them, or is it online order only?
 
Your best best is overseas for the moment, i will check the axiz pricelist for you okes today and frontosa saw them going for around 5k for the intel 80 gb.

OCZ vertex are the best value SSDs right now, check the newegg ratings it get's a full 5.
Prophecy are selling the 32GB
 
32gb is pointless, add gta4 and windows and your full up or bordering on full.

Axiz have 2 left, 80gb Intel - m for 4.4k

oh yeah, and apparently you get different types right - those that work through SATA, and those that go straight onto the mobo through PCIEx ?

any difference in speeds, or is the SATA Type really good enough?

That's true 32GB is too small for he windows user, but if those intel drives are selling for 5K get those... sounds like a sweet deal.

Personally I'm going to wait a few months, prices are going to fall for sure.
 
Yea keeper why not get hold of that oke, damn on the tip of my tongue who it was and ask him how to go about doing it.

Cause for 3 oddk for that drive was a sweet deal of note!!!!!!
 
like the OP though, i'm just not a fan of buying this way.....if it's not-a-workin', it's gonna suck big time.

We need some SA guys to take this opportunity and bring this stuff in for us - i've been seeing more and more SSD threads lately (or am i the only one noticing this?)

I'd pay R3000 for a 60GB Model, if that is even possible for the guy selling the stuff?

I just bought a 120GIG Vertex and imported it directly from USA,
http://www.frozencpu.com/ Worked like a charm, total cost including customs was just over R4000. PS: Had it shipped by US Postal Service took 10days in total to get to me ;) Just a note, Cape Mail told me you need a clearing agent to bring in anything over R500.

Yip - R3100 give or take R100 is what I've been able to confirm with ETA expected next week.

For the write/read/random IO performance of the OCZ vertex 60 gig - I think that's excellent "value" compared to other current offerings.

I'm planning a fresh install of Windows 7 RC 7077 and from all indications expect it to blitz and make my 300gig VelociRaptor rather slow in comparison.

Have started a major drive cleanup lol.

500gig Seagate and 300gig velo'raptor for downloads, mp3's and general.

60 gig SSD for OS install, audio/photo editing and often played multiplayer game installs.

Was on the lookout for a second hand GTX280 to go SLi in my Core i7 920 system but reckon the best performance mod by far has got to be the OCZ Vertex before anything else.

Fair dinkum ?

That's not bad at all.

Guess the 60gig would come all in at around R2500 then ?

Is it worth losing the local warranty support for R600 bucks .... dunno.

whats the difference between the vertex series and the core series, cause they both cost about the same for the 60GB (Core series is R60 more)
 
Ok, i'm convinced - I want the 60GB OCZ Vertex, by the end of the week.

does anyone own one of these, played with it or have experience with them (like, a dealer, perhaps?)

I dunno, 200MB/s is fast, but I expected better? I mean, I just bought a 1TB WD HDD Yesterday, and it can do like 75MB/s or so can't it?

i've copied at 50MB's plenty times, and that's over a LAN as well !
 
You expect better than 200? That is raid fast keeper, that is really fast man.

The main problem with the first ssd's was slow read and write but now the figures are staggering. I copy from my ssd to 1tb at about 70mb the whole way which i think is fast but you don't want an ssd purely for read write though i would imagine, the point of having such a high read and write would be for work mostly because huge files go faster when the drive can process them faster.

Yea those read and write figures are amazing if you ask me.
 
Well I use some High Tech 3D Software which does use Virtual Memory due to the fact that it can only use 2GB RAM (it's a 32-bit app, no 64-bit available) so this would speed things up quite considerably, right?

also, how fast is you Windows Startup time, I'd love to find out since you have an SSD - and you have Win7 too, right?

And 1 more question man (sorry, lol) since it hasn't been answered...

Is the SATA 2.0 Spec a bottleneck for the SSD Drive since I see there are ones that bypass the SATA Interface, going directly into the mobo through a PCIEx Slot? (The Falcon, iirc)
