ODS Unknowingly Shaped

I recently signed up with ODS for a Fiber Plus package. THe first day I got my access details I logged in and started to have a look around on the web and download a little. The first few days where really nice and fast and I was extremely happy. After a day or so I started to notice a slow down on the connection.

I at first though it was windows causing problems and I then went and configured a linux box to do the L2TP so I can get off windows and run everything on my linux box.

Low and behold ... no speed increase (for once windows is not to blame) after doing some research I have now found that the international bandwidth is shaped to 24% of the conneciton speed. What it boils down to is that my 192 connection is actually slower than a normal analog dialup on international.

I then decided to look into the news groups and I was once again greeted with massive failure. IS, SAIX, Verizon, every news server I can think of failed.

I called the guys at ODS (You know who you are) and ask them about the shaping. I was assured that they knew nothing about it and that they have been having calls about this problem. So now it seems like the connections they retail are being shaped by they provider.

I hope to hear back from them soon, but till then it seems like I am stuck with a connection that is not able to do much.

So I plead witht the users of the forum ... Please tell me where I can al least get onto a news group from ODS... It would be greatly appreciated!
 
I don't know about ODS, but I have a 512k IS satellite connection that runs pretty well flat out to Easynews via HTTP after hours and 35-40k during working hours.

As long as it is local my connectin is bloody fast. Easynews local ?
 
Good lord ... now I have to reg for a news server as well. Man, this is crap. Is ther just now way of using my current connection for anything except searching google and browsing news24 and myadsl ....

The ODS Fiber connections are subject to a 1:4 International contention ratio as described on the web site. We are working to increase this however the costs of International bandwidth at the moment are preventing us upgrading further, If you would prefer to move to an IS Business Uncapped we are having a special where we do not charge setup fee.

You're increasing contention ratios? While I'm sure the transparency is appreciated it's not something I would advertise too much.
 
Thanks for the response Dean. For now I am going to be staying with ODS and we will see where things will lead. I would appreaciate it if I could get news group access but I am not putting too much on that hope.

So far the local has been blistering fast, but unfortonately there is not much local content that is really up my alley. We will have to see where things lead but a week is maybe not enough to judge.
