Off-grid system prices from Solar Advice

That's for prepaid. You can thank the DA for that. In Jhb we don't pay a monthly fee for prepaid...
We also pay a DA tax of R3,31 a unit on prepaid. We use up to 1000 units a month as I WFH and my wife runs her business from the property. At least for us her electricity consumption is based off how busy she is.

I also make her pay for the power so technically I'm only paying the R200 protection money.

Home User tariff

The Home User tariff applies to you if you do not qualify for the Lifeline or Domestic tariff. The monthly costs apply as follows:

  • 0 – 600 kWh: 208,73 c/kWh (excl. VAT) or 240,04 c/kWh (incl. VAT)

  • >600 kWh: 288,05 c/kWh (excl. VAT) or 331,26 c/kWh (incl. VAT)

  • Monthly Home User service charge of R168,95 (excl. VAT) or R194,29 (incl. VAT

Yes, but not instead of, we had little choice due to lack of viable North facing roof space both on our house roof and garage roofs. Our North facing house roof is small as the house runs East to West and the garage roofs have too much shade due to CoJ trees. So we went for two strings of 5 PV panels each totalling 3.6kWp which under ideal conditions and sufficient load we can maximise fully. Our peak window is small compared to the same North facing kWp but we get the first and last watts early in the morning and late in the evening. I want to add another PV panel to both strings to maximise the MPPT but will only do this once we have replaced the LA batteries with LFP as our day time load at the moment doesn’t maximise the current strings.

I think you are wrong sir, this unit switches automatically.
That's great then.

Are you saying there is no anti-islanding?
I was wrong, thank you for pointing that out.
Stalker. Do you have a database full of all MyBB members's details? This is the reason why I never respond to polls...

They are completely ****ing me on water though - I pay 800 a month before I use a drop. 50mm conduit, that I don't need. They refuse to change it. I suspect I may have to have some "scrap" guy come steal the meter, so that they are forced to install a 20mm connection.
Dig a well.

I just pay attention. Sometimes I get it wrong like in the mecer thread with @AlphaJohn and @Lupus, I can never remember who's mecer has lithium and who's has lead acid, or does neither have it yet but want it, which one is the mags guy etc but if it freaks you out I will just stop posting, you won't hear from me again, no skin off my nose, just trying to help.

My 2 cents worth. Its imperative to note that you have to invest in getting at least a 20kWhr battery of you want to be off the grid. Many suppliers insist on investing in PV panels so you may see huge panels but poor battery specs as batteries are the biggest cost and that would initially turn many people away. Thus, people get stuck with Solar systems with many panels but no where to use it. . With a good hybrid inverter (5kwh) and panels if configured correctly by 1 am latest, a 20 kWhr battery can be fully charged and on a decent day (the 20 kWhr will then be used from 3pm to 6am the next morning and even be used to heat your geyser for hot water needed in the morning). Alternatively go down with a 15kWhr batter and use a gas geyser as an option. It is also important to monitor and implement some smart tools like smart wifi switches so that you can "dump" excess electricity that once the battery is full - run the pool pump, geyser, washing machine and dishwasher (preferably in sequence and not simultaneously). It all depends on what you want and bearing in mind you will pay extra if you want all your appliances to run at the same time and if you want your plates / clothes washed when you wake up every morning.

No worries :laugh:I should have used cartooney font.

I don't believe you are.

If I want Eskom I need to pay 30k (last I checked) for them to run a cable over and trench to my plot in CPT.
I didn't bother, and went fully offgrid.

The local building inspector did moan slightly, but I was adamant I didn't want any overpriced electricity from them. Been offgrid for 7 years+- and don't pay fee's for no services rendered.

Ok so you originally started without any Eskom feed. I think that might be the only way to not be hooked up to Eskom in fees for life.

The issue starts and never ends the moment anything is hooked up. I have yet to find a way to completely get rid of Eskom after the fact, I was told its not possible to completely disconnect and if I have my own electricity source I still have to pay the connection fee.

Are you still paying the connection fee monthly or have you found a way to avoid getting billed ? Unless you live in an actual shack there is no way I can think of that Eskom is going to ignore you from billing the default connection fee.
I live in the Eastern Cape on a large private property with many houses on it (Around 150). Its all walled in and next to the beach. I dont know of any connection fee. Isnt that a WC thing?
