My visits to Cape Town often are business related and the last time the wife and I visited was a few years back.

Question: Any suggestions on activities or places worth visiting that are off the beaten path?

We have done the usual touristy stuff like:
  • Climb Table Mountain
  • Helicopter Two-Oceans Flight
  • Two Oceans Aquarium
  • Wine Tasting
  • Penguin Colony
  • Ostrich Farm
  • Good Hope Nature Reserve
  • Whale Watching
  • Kirstenbosch Gardens

We are been there-done that kind of people. I was thinking of different things to surprise my wife.

Like maybe shark cage dive (I don't think she will be up for that though)
Eating out at really local places.

Thanks in advance :)

Boat ride to robin island then sun downers after
Bridge Jumping/Bungee jumping slightly up the cost.
Sky Diving
Absailing
Mountain climbing
Hang Gliding
Surfing/Kite Boarding
There are some nice new place to eat out in the Blouberg/Sunset Beach area that has a nice atmosphere when the weather is nice.
Otherwise if you wish to go on a little road trip, then Robertson is nice if you like wine beautiful farms and river trips - less than a 2hr drive.

Everything about Cape Town is horribly over-commercialized. There is no "Off the beaten track"

I suggest you drive up to Paternoster for the day and enjoy the little fishing village atmosphere.

West Coast R27

Evita se Perron (Pieter Dirk Uys's Theatre) in Darling just outside town,
in the same vicinity there is the Westcoast Fossil Park and Geelbek Restaurant, a bird reserve on
the Langebaan Lagoon, and the Westcoast National Park, where you can braai right next to the sea.

Stay out of Hermanus, lately it's become like being in the middle of Cape Town.

West Coast fishing villages are nice and quiet.

Spoken by someone from anywhere but Cape Town! The reason why Capetonians don't ever visit Table Mountain, the Waterfront, etc is because of all the 'tourists' (and that includes everyone not from Cape Town) taking over.

We have always got new places to see and things to do.... in peace.

Speak for yourself... I love the mountain. So many trails:P Last weekend I found a fantastic trail chappies side that I hadn't been on. If we saw 3 other ppl the whole time it was a lot. I love the fact that so many locals spend their day at Canal Walk / Tyger Valley. It leaves more peace and quiet on the mountain for peeps like me:P And no, the people we saw were not tourists, but locals:P

+1 to paternoster and all the R27 stuff above.

Knysna may be a far for a trip to cape town (5 hours drive?).

Tygerberg Zoo
Butterfly world
Obs alternative health faire (1st Sunday every month)
Inthaka island for a leisurely walk (preferably when the market is happening so that you can relax afterwards with some good food)
Cool runnings http://www.toboggan.co.za/

Closer to your visit check the What's On? page on capetalk.co.za

With all the things you have already done you need to find surprises in the small things, which means they won't be supplied to you but your need to find them yourself.

Thanks for this ... I have always read about Paternoster but never was there.
Thing is we will be staying for a week in Cape Town ... I am not sure if a day trip to Paternoster would do it justice.

Yeah, I agree. Thanks for the heads up re capetalk.co.za - I did not think about that.

Cool running looks like fun.
