We signed in Jan 2006.
R1.25m = R107k in duty
After the change end feb: R45000

I recall as-if it was yesterday. I even told the agent i will pay the R1 in cash. So my point that I try to make, look at brackets if you gonna spend a-lot. And yes, a transfer table exists in smaller chunks/brackets.

So is it still impossible to offer less and save more?

Yes, you're working it out wrong.
 
Yes, at no point is one of the brackets cheaper than the one below it. Your point?

Note that that R20550 is not for ANY price between 1.7 and 1.8m. It's for 1.7m
1.79 you need to add another 90k worth to the price at 6.5%, so you'd pay R585 + R20550 = R21135 which is R65 less than on R1.8m

Go online, any calculator. Example

Purchase price : 1250 000 (transfer duty = R7500)
Change that to R1149 999 (then its R3500)

This is just an example, R1 ..... R4000 saving

Thats with the newest tax table

Please provide two values that are close together that provide a large duty change, and I will plug them into a calculator.

It's marginal:

Lets take the following examples:
Ex 1:
House Val = 1,376,000
Transfer fee = R11,250 + (0.06 x R1000) = R11,260.00

House Val = 1,374,000
Transfer fee = 3% of val > R1mln : 0.03 x 374,000 = R11,220.00

Ex 2:
House Val = 2,476,000
Transfer fee = R88,250 + (0.11 x R1000) = R88,360.00

House Val = 2,474,000
Transfer fee = R44,250 + (0.08 x R549,000) = R88,170.00
