Hi everyone

I'm interested to hear varying opinions on OfferZen as a platform. What are the positives about it, does it actually benefit us as the candidate to use a digital recruitment platform or have you found there's a lot more value out of dealing with a real recruiter over the phone.

I like the idea of having companies view your 'digital profile' instead of your CV - but on that note, do companies still prefer to use OfferZen as a primary source for hiring candidates?

Very curious to hear both sides of the story because I'm seeing a lot of mixed reviews.

Cheers!

Could the moderators move this thread to the Software and Web Development section; I think it would be most appropriate there.

I dunno, I tried OfferZEN whilst I was still at university and wasn't able to get a deal through them... something about they don't have opportunities at the moment. I think OfferZEN is a cool idea, will definitely give them a go should I think of changing companies in the future.

Locally agents offer no value imo. OfferZen removes them and that is ideal.

I wonder if the vicious ones still exist - where they take a huge chunk of your pay each month. The court did rule against this sometime last year.

Recruiters don't take a chunk of your salary each month, that definitely isn't allowed. They only get paid a percentage of your salary as a fee at an extra cost to the company (i.e. if your new job offers a position paying R200k/annum and that company is using a recruiter at 15%, the company will have to pay the recruiter R30,000 out their own pocket). If you've ever paid a recruiter, you should report them immediately.

The reason I'm asking is i'm curious to hear other peoples perspectives on using a platform to find a job rather than speaking to a recruiter who is able to offer valuable insights into the market, discuss the client and their outlooks and how that can benefit our job search.

Is the reason people enjoy using platforms like OfferZen solely because they don't want to speak to recruiters?

Well, it also helps that OfferZen you don't have to worry that the recruiter is an idiot and because you have C# on your profile, it means that you can do a C job (has happened to my dad).

One friend I had was very happy with OfferZen, as he got an offer within a week of applying to it, and it was near double his current pay at the time with a more interesting field, junior.
The issue is if you have no experience, OfferZen is not really the place as they need to be able to vet the candidates, so they'll decline/say no opportunities.

Was pretty fun to some of their make days though, I have a couple of their shirts I wear, sad that they are stopping/have stopped that.

What OfferZen brings is that you don't need to go to companies to apply, it's all in one place and the company can make you an offer.
Haven't used the system myself though, only hearsay, still continuing my studies and mostly happy where I am for work.

Have you experienced such a recruiter? I have never.

Yes I have, I know they are many more out there, it's just a pity that the ratio between **** recruiters vs decent recruiters is far too high.

How many recruiters have you used in your career?

We interviewed a bunch of people recently, and I would say 90% of them came from offerzen.

Back in the day I got my job through a recruiter which was pretty good, but I have also dealt with turds.

It's been a long time but more than a dozen in 30 years.

When chatting to a recruiter it sometimes helps to ask how many placements they do per year, and/or what their average CTC for placement is (they track all of this, since this determines their income).

I don’t know what the numbers are for SA, but if you talk to enough you will get an idea: you ideally want a recruiter that has a lower rate of placements, but for higher CTCs, and you also want a recruiter that takes a higher percentage from your potential employer.

The idea is to not just be part of a numbers game, where someone clueless idiot fires your CV at random companies hoping for a bite. Many low commission, low CTC recruiters do this. The others tend to have a far better understanding of the sector and the clients need, and waste far less of everyone’s time.
