Visited friend who know very little about computers, after removing 8 toolbars from internet explorer and running ccleaner, the pc now tries to constantly install/configure office 2003 bringing up a dialog pointing to E:/

Any ideas on how to stop it permanently - I have to assist over the phone so don't really want him messing in regedit.

Is he using Windows XP or 7? and which service pack?

What version/service pack is his office suite?

I have seen this happen in the past. Usually when an office application such as word is being started, a dependent plugin is missing so it will start a install wizard which requires the installation media. If you click cancel enough, one of 2 things will happen:

App will not start or 2 it does actually start. If you're fortunate that it does start, you can disable the plugin if you know which one it needs. Usually it will say looking for some cabinet file, if you have the installation material, you can simply browse for it.

Running microsoft xp, no idea about his office I will try find out.
This doesn't happen when he tries to start office, it happens constantly when opening any program

This is what i found on the internet:

Windows installer tries to install Office 2003
Every time I open any program the Windows installer tries to install Office 2003 - I have uninstalled the program, removed manually form registry. defraged, ran Registry Mechaic and Total PC Heath programs. Turned on the compter no problem. Installed Office 2003 again and error is there again.

Answer:

Do you have multiple versions of Office installed on your computer?
Are you logged in as an Administrator?
Start any Office program as Administrator and see if it helps.
Go the following location “C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office 11” or “C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office 11” (incase of 64-bit Operating system).
Locate WINWORD.exe, right click on it and click on “Run as Administrator”.
Allow it to finish the windows installer configuration.
Restart Word and see if the windows installer prompts.
If the above does not resolve the issue, install the latest Windows Installer and see if it helps.

You guys deleted or emptied the Config.Msi folder on the C drive (or E as it points to it). It's supposed to be hidden and contains some setup files needed for Office to function.

The only thing you can do to make it work normally is to repair install from the installation disc or files and stop using stupid programs which claim to fix broken software.

Fully agreed. Your best option will be to reinstall / repair Office 2003. Good luck.

I disagree with this line - CCleaner is a great program for clearing off clutter and is def. not a stupid program imo, to each their own I guess.

It could also be another application that caused this, Like adobe Reader, Flash player ect ect.

I used to get this when i installed Office and VB6 ever time i launch VB6 the Windows Installer title is Officce, If you leave it until it completes then relaunch again it starts allover again, quite a pain.

+1 CCcleaner is the chosen cleaner for probably 22K computers in our company globally which get CCD imaged in with SysPrep

And i'm also not a big fan of registry cleaners, but this one actually works

It is a stupid program when left to the average computer user, it does more damage than good.

I feel sorry for 22K users across the Globe that has an IT department that believes a registry or temp file clean/fix will resolve any problems.

CCleaner works wonders, think it's the only cleaner that actually can fix a few issues, saved me a few rebuilds while I was still doing desktop support years ago
