Battle.net forum post

Blizzard has decided to use your RealID on official forums, which means that your real name will be displayed on future posts when they implement it. I don't think they have finalized it yet though, since they are still looking at posts about it.

Let the QQ start.

So long as they make your armory and server details anonymous thats fine, otherwise this will open up the pandora's box of discrimination and harassment.

No more trolling paladins on there i guess.

800+ pages of qq on the US boards already.

I like how they found Bashiok's Facebook/Myspace/twitter/family contact details; just goes to show what a bad idea it really is.

i read somewhere that some big shot at wow said the whole system is save and it wont make a diff in peoples in game names or real names are displayed and he said he has so much trust in it that he would put his real name and surname there, so he did.

10 mins later some random guy posted that guys, home address, his criminal record and both his kids facebook pages and saying, this took me 10 minutes, what do you think i could have done if i had some time.

He got banned ofcourse, but still

Wasn't a bigshot, it was one of the forum moderators, Bashiok, I believe. Some of the info was wrong though, which just means that people can target the wrong person when something like that happens.

It's really a bad idea. It's only going to discourage participation from the smarter people who know about privacy and identity security more, while the gormless facebook-lol meatheads spam their stupid oneliner trash about what they had for breakfast all over the place.

Roll on The Old Republic.

Glad I gave up WoW for good last month, waste of time and money, have better games to enjoy.

What? Now people will know that it was me that was trying to sell my luscious body to nubile sailors arriving in Stormwind City?
Noooooooooooooo!

Roleplaying does not work if your disguise breaks.

Seems as if there was a simple script command you can enter ingame and it returns your RealID information. If this gets embedded into an addon and some clever person thinks of letting the addon send this information to him, then it could be fairly easy for an addon authot to gather tons of RealID information...

I won't repost the command line, but it looks like this won't be good for the community

I saw that script. It was a whisper to yourself from yourself, which is one of the reasons that it worked. AFAIK, if you send the whisper to someone else that is not a RealID friend, it would fail. An addon could probably still save the whisper and transmit it to someone else, but you'll have to install the addon first.

I might be wrong about it though.

The GS 3.2 Beta addon has been pulled off official sites due to this. It seems WoW's API (much like EVE's) has lots of juicy information...

It is possible to disable RealID in your account management settings under Parental Controls at least

And the most widely used add-on is the first to use the exploit. Wonder if this will kill GS.

I've enabled parental controls on my bnet account and disabled RealID.

I'm still worried about where this is going to end up. I don't want my real name appearing in the game to strangers.

When does the new Final Fantasy MMO get released?
