Hey guys,

I did a quick search of this forum and couldn't find an official nexus 7 thread, so I decided to make one!
(If there is one this one can be locked/deleted)

Anyway, just got my Nexus 7 yesterday :D
I ordered mine from Kalahari (16GB - R3499) I know I know, there are much cheaper ways to get it, so please share with everyone the various ways to get this wonderful tablet :)

Just FYI, the Kalahari tablet is imported with the UK and as such comes with a UK 2pin plug with no adapter for local plugs.

Anyway, I charged it up and it's really great :) I had a Asus Transformer (TF101) before which was great, but it was a bit unwieldy to really carry around or hold up for extended use. The nexus 7 is perfect for these use-cases.

It's very light and quite small, but the extra screen real estate compared to my One X is very noticeable and welcome when web browsing especially.

It is also extremely, extremely fast in simply navigating the tablet and opening Apps! Even my One X running CM 10, I'm not sure if it's as quick as this! (To be fair, the CM10 ROM is still in Alpha).

Finally, the screen is really nice, very clear and text is very crisp. Not quite as crisp and clear as the new iPad or my One X, but it's good enough that I wouldn't miss those other devices. Colours and contrast appear great as well, but still haven't used it enough to pass final judgement.

Anyway, haven't had it long enough to do thorough testing, I'll update on battery life, etc after a while.

Discuss/share your experience, tips and tricks that you've had with your Nexus 7 :)

I've had mine for about 3 weeks now and absolutely love it. The battery life is especially fantastic but I suppose the lack of juice-draining 3G has something to do with that. I currently have GTA III, Max Payne, Mass Effect Infiltrator, ShadowGun and Dead Space installed, all of which play great. Google Now is both creepy and useful. For me it's the perfect argument for giving away information for a direct benefit; a fair trade-off, perhaps.

The cheapest local price I've seen so far for the N7 is from Landmark PC (http://www.landmarkpc.co.za/store/asus-google-nexus-16gb-p-8937.html) at R3238.91 (16GB).

Zakdoc89 has his latest batch of the 16GB for R3200. See here
Probably dropped his price due to the Landmark PC price.

I have a friend selling them for R3100.

For those who haven't got their $25 Google Play credit yet, here is how to do so:
Follow this tutorial, just ignore the first step ie. doing a factory reset.
It also allows you to download all the material not available on Google Play in SA, such as magazines etc.

Also, if you wish to connect an SD card Reader or Flash drive to the Nexus, just use the Nexus Media Importer App. It works great.

Got myself a 8GB through eBay. Waited about a week and a half to arrive.
R2631. The R31 was SARS's handling fee.

Rooted using the Nexus root toolkit, in fact doing pretty much every thing else though it. (Backups, flashing etc

Currently running Paranoid Android rom. Very nice, just feels a bit sticky at some places vs the stock version

Got an otg cable. It's extremely useful

Have a 3/4 day old one as new for sale. Pm me for details

Hi!

I got my Nexus 7 five days ago. I got it through someone who has business in the UK, meaning I paid £199 = R2600 for the 16GB.

I'm absolutely loving it - its a great size device, and very fast. At least, compared to my Motorola Defy, that is. I'm considering getting myself a MiFi router to ensure connectivity when I'm on the move. Does anyone know about any good deals?

As far as I could tell, I did not receive a Google Play voucher/credit. Does this only come with US Nexus 7 devices? In what form does it come?

I also got mine from the UK. Did you get it from John Lewis, with a 2 year guarantee?

There isn't a physical voucher, rather it is automatically loaded onto your Google Play Wallet when you follow the steps I mentioned in post 3 above.

I joined the club this morning. Great device! Perfect size.

Edit: I only just read now how to get the $25 on the playstore, however I already signed into my google acc and enabled geolocation services, does that mean I need to do a factory reset? Doh

Welcome dude. Quite a few of us N7 n00bs :)

You rooted her yet?

I did the VPN thing this morning and it did not work. About to flash CM10 so will try again before I sign in to Google. Will be nice to get a $25 credit.

Thanks :)

Nope not rooted yet. I will try later, I will just factory reset and follow the steps. Really hope it works.

No need for the factory reset.
Just undo the sync with your google account, then follow the steps I mentioned.

Tried the steps in post 3 however it won't accept any of my credit cards. Keeps saying "This credit card does not qualify for the google play credit" or something to that effect. Tried 4 different cards. Poo! :(

Edit: Going to ask a friend from the USA if I can try her card, I am guessing if that doesn't work then nothing will.

Pro tip: app called Ultimate Rotate allows you to rotate into portrait mode on any screen including the home screen :)
