OFFICIAL HTC Desire Thread

haha, I lol'd this morning. Unlocked my screen to get an mms, and a windscreen wiper wiped the screen..... (it raining in Durbs)

Hah, wait for a foggy morning - you can't see crap because your phone's screen mists up. :D Yes, really... Those animations fall under the type of small touches I really appreciate.

How do you get the weather to display. Mine is on Pretoria, but it just says 'No weather data available'...?

Please do tell what app this is :D

No app. It's the boggo-standard HTC clock widget - the one that would've been on your home screen when you first started up the phone... ;)

I must be doing something wrong, when i unlock my sceen all i see is just the clock with weather update, do you turn on any settings?

To Root or not to Root? does it support South Africa? if so what is the best rom to use

where/ how can i backup if i do root?

I'd say the main advantage to rooting is the ability to install tons of appz into SD card. If this is not an issue for you, rather wait for official Desire Andriod 2.2 update which will have ability to install/copy appz to SD Card.

I rooted mine a day after I bought it. Now, I've installed tons of appz into SD card. No more low memory/space issues. I been using MoDaCo Custom ROM with no issues so far.

Cool, Im sooo tempted, did you lose the sense UI?
what happens if you need to upgrade to 2.2 later this month? I do know the HTC leaf version due will be upgraded much later, but they locking off quite a bit when they do

Not at all! The custom ROM is based on Official HTC Desire ROM with a few tweaks. You still retain ur SENSE UI. I always prefer customs ROMs and hacking my phone LOL. Rooting means I will get Customs Android 2.2 before HTC or Leaf releases it.

Yes... Remove the widget from your home screen and re-add it. Scroll through the available clock styles and select the normal HTC flip-clock style (I think it's option 3). Once you've confirmed the style & location, it asks whether you want to 'Use full screen animation'. Obviously, make sure that's ticked.

The animations are sometimes easy to miss, as they only run after unlocking the phone and only until you touch the screen...

Thanx Mate :D

I am gonna be rooting tonight :D

I have read most of the documentations here,

sounds simple enough, My only Question is where does one get the ROMs from, is there a comparison list between which ROM is the best one to work with?

I see you using MoDaCo Custom ROM,
The one they talk about in the guide is: r1-a2sd-desire-dalvik-fresh-signed
another two i found: Pays-ROM Desire Sense v2.0 (Rocksolid) (BraveSoul)

Does anyone know the difference between the two, which is safe and more reliable?

If any of you rooted please could you post what ROM you using :)

Edit: If you used MoDaCo ROM Alpha r22.1 do you experience these Known Issues:

Bluetooth does not work reliably
FM Radio finds stations but does not produce any sound
Footprints camera view is rotated 90 degrees
USB mount notification does not fire - use 'USB Mount' application from menu.

the 4gb msd seems rather small. i just want to know whether one can just put in any micro sd card into the phone. i have seen 16gb ones for about 650 bucks. would be cool to put that in instead of the measly 4gb

Far as I can remember, the Desire supports up to 32gb. Although increased storage will only really come into its own with Android 2.2's support for installing apps to sd card... And yes, I know about apps2sd, but I'm keeping my phone unrooted for now.

Why not, isn't it a good idea to root your fone?

That's not a question with a simple answer; suffice to say that there are risks. Educate yourself though and you should be fine. Truth be told, if Leaf drag their feet a week too long with the 2.2 update I'll be rooting away ;)

I so want to root, as my space is long gone (Phone not even a week old), but I don't like the idea of messing with it now. I unlocked my previous HTC(Tytn2) and had no issues. In fact, ran Android on it a lot of the time. When I get it back I am gonna try to make it a full fledged Android phone completely, but waiting for MTN to fix it for me first;-)

I think I will try the patience approach...I am not a patient person, but I will try for now.

Can you advise which version of the rooting did you use, was it Modaco R5? or one of the others, What functionality does not work with your, or does everything work?

You don't need a Modaco ROM to root your phone. Rooting just purely allows you "Superuser" rights which are normally locked by the service provider. All other functionalities remain the same.

Changing your ROM (Modaco) does require a rooted phone.

So you can use the phone like normal, but its just rooted, and you dont need to install a diff ROM. In other words, can you root the phone purely to gain access to the SD card to save apps on it, and leave everything else unchanged?

Sorry but I don't entirely understand how it works.

@cyb3rt

Rooting the phone gives you the freedom to use other operating systems (Roms) and features that the manufacturers / network operators would not like you having access too...

In most cases an alternative rom is required as Rooting / unlocking the phone either erases the original rom or makes it unusable... so you will most likely have to install another rom once you have rooted the phone...
