OFFICIAL HTC Desire Thread

Settings, Wireless and Networks, Mobile Networks, Access Point Names

For MMS you should have

Name: MTN MMS
APN: myMTN
Proxy: <Not set>
Port: <Not set>
Username: mtnmms
Password: mtnmms
Server: <Not set>
MMSC: http://mms.mtn.co.za/mms/wapenc
MMS Proxy: 196.11.240.241
MMS Port: 8080
MMS protocol :Wap 2.0
MCC: 655
MNC: 10 or 103
Authentication type: <Not set>
APN Type: mms

Try sending an MMS from your number to your number. If that does not work then either you not provisioned for mms or settings are wrong. If it works but you still cannot send/receive mms from other numbers, then problem is on MTN's side. Is your number ported to MTN?

Thanks for the info it does not work any other advise? how do i check/know if my number is ported to MTN?

I don't know, it still seems a little unsafe for me? I don't care about ROM's and all that, I'm just getting sick of the 'running low on disc space' message and I have to uninstall stuff...

Has anybody done it, and how is the experience after? On the Desire specifically.

You don't need a Modaco ROM to root your phone. Rooting just purely allows you "Superuser" rights which are normally locked by the service provider. All other functionalities remain the same.

Changing your ROM (Modaco) does require a rooted phone.

Cool, Thanks, Please forgive my Noob questions, i am new to the Android Desire, and i welcome being able to be free from a manufacturers lock down of the operating system.

Can you possibly Nudge me in the right direction as to how do you root the HTC desire, but without changing the ROM?

I am stuck at the point of making a gold card, but now what does it do?

I am really keen to lean how this stuff works. I have installed the Android SDK, and even created my own little emulated Droid on the PC, I wanna eventually learn how to programme apps for this platform

Here is the walkthrough I am considering, got the goldcard steps in it as well.

Modaco

I had a look at this one by nimbu as well, I attempted it, messed up on the gold card creation, then formatted my card, and used the auto gold card creation tool successfully

Just a hint the tool is much better then the Hex Editor, can be flimsy if you dont know what you doing

are you changing your rom as well? do you need to for apps2sd?

do you need to for apps2sd?

People are "Rooting" there phones and changing to different ROM's for that exact reason. All versions of Android from 2.1 downwards don't allow for saving of apps onto the SD card. Most if not all "cooked" ROMs have apps2sd.

The new version of Android 2.2 does allow it and rumour has it that HTC will release it towards the end of June.

No this crap looks to confusing. The more forums I read the less I want to do it. I'm just going to wait for more info on froyo.

I had the same thought, but what got me was, that you dont have to lose the sense UI, and functionality, its like a blue pill, red pill story, and whichever one you take there is no going back, either you stuck with or without apps2sd, but iether way you will still be way cooler... There is a risk, and i thought i almost bricked mine when i followed nimu's instructions, but it was my gold card that wasn't created right, if you want to make the GC easily format to FAT32 and use the GoldCard Tool creater to make your GC, the email service is up for your personalisedSdCard.img, at least that can be your pill.

I like the fact that at least Modaco has a recovery option though :)

It is confusing, when it comes to the ROMs, thats why i ask anyone out there who can help us with what ROMS you are using where you don't lose functionality and can still have our peanut peeled on both sides :D

If you Jump I will Jump too !

HTC will release it June, Leaf only in 12 months, so Rooting is def the way to go, there is also alot of bonus functionality unlocked too, kinda like playing Need 4 Speed :D

BTW,

how cool is this if your Droid is on wifi, use google maps, search an address, then click more, and the LIL man icon for street view, Then go Menu > Compass mode on, here is a compass mode that rotates as you turn around, Android Rocks YooTooB Vid: http://bit.ly/ccGICm

And we didn't even have to install a thing, Now me thinks there might be a Navigation App that can use this mode with turn by turn voice and visual guide as you move through + free wifi everywhere.... i can only but dream :D

Questions:

- So you used Nimbu's instructions?
- Did it go smoothly (apart from the GC thing)
- Did you use al the files he has on the instructions or did you use another ROM?
- Is the phone better now in any way?

I followed his guide, even the one to make the GC, then i now successfully got the GC made with the tool,
you have to follow the guide step by step CAREFULLY,
everything seems to be working though,
fone is alot faster, but I am kinda thinking i should have went with modaco's r5, coz it was supposed to be better, not sure which is the most latest though from those two, couldn't find any other ROMS' have you?

I have googled to death and 90% says Modaco is best. Where did you get the tool to create the GC, does it have instructions?

yes it does, It is available here with instructions

BTW did you find which Modaco is the best one? is it r5?

As far as I can tell the link I posted is best yeah. r5.

Thanks, will have a look at the GC thing, if its not to much trouble I will give the root a go!

EDIT: In the GC procedure, can I use just 1 SD card and store my backup on my PC, or is a clean second SD card needed in the process?

I made a GC, got only one card, you can format it and partition it afterwards, but keep the .img file they mailed you it will ony work for that Sd card, and no other, if you get another card you need another img file

Edit: Please let me know how it goes :), but remember to backup your fone data first, sms, email, etc

Yeah Im going to go ahead and try when I get home, don't have my USB cable at work. Data is backup up already, just going to copy the files over at home.

Cool Mate, lemme know how it goes with That rom, i will be around this evening, wanna see if its possible for me to reROM mine to r5-desire-root too

Nope, this seems to dodgy for me thanks... Followed every step word for word, got the SD made into a GC, but as soon as I run the first batch file I get some error about to many links or something. I dont see anything on the Modaco forums regarding this either...
