Fractions of a second in benchmarks don't impress me, but tactile feel and build quality does, and by that measure the One is arguably the best phone the world has yet seen. I am also on my 4th straight HTC, stretching back to Windows Mobile days, and I've not had a day's hassle with any of them even after having each one run custom software by the end of my first day with it.

well said,For software,HTC has been going all out providing the latest updates of android to the HTC One fans quicker than Samsung at the moment..

I was in the same boat as you a few months back.

Die hard apple fan, had every new iPhone out.. but after the iPhone 5 and ios7, I felt something lacking.. I was bored and it felt like the same thing over and over.

Narrowed down my choices to the S4, One and Xperia.

S4 way too plastic for my liking. Xperia is cool but a didn't like the square feel.. the One was perfect, the main point for me was the camera and the metal finish - it looks good.

So that's my story, I wouldn't change my One for any other phone right now.

Thank you all for your input... I went by Vodaworld over lunch to see if I can get a powered up HTC to play with but to no avail... Loads of S4's to play with but no HTC... In my Hand... the HTC feels MUCH better.

Wish I knew what the S5's release date will be... I am upgrading in December and I have seen rumors of Samsung pulling the release date to January for the S5...

That being said... S4 vs HTC... the HTC won my vote... Roll on December!!!

Both Samsung and HTC will likely show new flagships depressingly early in the new year... But phones have, a generation or 2 ago, reached the point where that honestly doesn't phase me. Sure, my old HTC Desire would need some Apps2SD trickery, but it would still do 90 percent of what the One does at least half as well. It did frustrate me towards the end of our relationship, but my HTC Sensation easily kept me happy the entire contract period, and I have little doubt the One will put in a repeat performance.

I have been an absolute purist and fan of HTC for many years.
The one thing you may be concerned about that you mention in your first post, is the release of latest updates.
HTC together with the networks are inherently slow to release updates. Esp in SA.
I have a Nexus 10 tablet for the past year, and updates are immediate.
The update for the Nexus 10 to 4.4 will be within a couple of weeks and always immediate with world wide release.
To me this makes a difference, as rooting is not an option anymore.
That said, reading the Nexus 5 reviews, even I may be tempted to import one of these and keep the contract for the HTC Two :)
Certainly it's worth checking it out before your final decision.
Failing that, it will be the HTC One for me too on Jan 1 2014.

Hi,

Indeed, most retail shops just frown upon you when you ask them. You can have a look @ Expansys , Orange online store. I have bought a clear hard shell case from Expansys-still waiting for delivery though..
 
Does anyone else accidentally go to Google now all the time? I swear I'm not even long pressing on the home button sometimes.

It happens to me all the time. The full stop on the keyboard is right above it and that's the problem.
 
I have updated to 4.3 sense 5.5
just flashed it Vodacom taking too long

yes you still get the normal prompts as long as you don't switch to a custom Rom
Whole process took no more than 10 min
Enjoying the update its way way faster .
