Well its been out for a long time , I personally couldn't wait and actually there wasnt any real reason to ,to be fair Vodacom doesn't add any bloat ware .

But I suppose its neither here or there cause 4.2 wasnt too bad
I just like the sense 5.5 and now the TV app works cause there is an option for SA granted theres no guides but it allows you to go to the next step and configure remotes .
Plus a whole host of other cool things.

Might be placebo but I swear its a lot better , theres not as much drain when using the Mobile Network ,I get about a day and half
and I would say I am a bit of a power user , since BBM been clicking away almost all day .I normally put it on charge after I get the 14% warning .

Yip, build quality wise the One is gorgeous, and it's use of Android is the smoothest, the reason the One was awarded to smartphone of the year 2013 was because it's implementation of Android was best, S4 can stutter at times, just not as 'smooth' (not hardware related at all). I had a HTC One X previously and was the best phone I'd ever had at that point in time, so I'm also in the " won't swap my One for anything else at the moment" camp.

Why worry about updates from Vodacom? When you can get all of them so much sooner via custom ROMs on xda, I unlocked and rooted my One the same day I got it 6 months ago and never looked back.

There's nothing that you "need" in the Vodacom updates that's not in the custom ROMs, as long as you download a WWE compatible ROM ( world wide English), which is 80% of those available on xda, the One's in SA are the HTC_016 model which are included in the WWE batch, the only thing Vodacom do is add in their bloatware junk which isn't needed at all.

OK, downloading the one linked in the previous page. How do I get S-off? Do I need to do a back-up of everything (I know it's standard practice etc, but assuming everything goes well, does this update overwrite any currently installed apps, etc?)
 
S-off is not that urgent, I'd rather concentrate on unlocking boot loader and getting the phone rooted, then installing a custom ROM, just go to the xda HTC One forum and all is very well explained

So basically we can just unlock the loader, root, install TWRP and flash that rom from the link? Really no need for S-Off?

No guys you need S -Off to write the File well the update file if thats what you doing.
Root gives you super user , unlocking the boot loader allows you access to the Table and S -off alows you access to write to the partion

Please Note this is not as Complicated or scary as it sounds .
If you ever wanted to return to stock or send your Phone in for Warranty you will need S -off to return to Normal.

you need to follow the instructions and make sure you get the right file for your H Boot .

To install the Update as I have because I feel no need for another custom rom
You need S- Off
and not TWRP or CWM you need stock recovery
Once you are updated you can flash your custom recovery .

Unlocking the Bootloader , is the only thing that will do a Factory re set of sorts , loosing all the apps etc (Back ups is always recommended )
S -off you wont loose anything so you are safe .
If you need help just post here I will help as best as I can .

Ok please explain the S-off process to me. How exactly you did it.
 
You don't need s-off to flash ROMs, s-off is for changing CID or the hboot animation on startup. Just unlock bootloader, install recovery and flash ROM, whole process takes less than 10 minutes.
 
Just search for How to unlock HTC one bootloader on YouTube and watch the xda video.

On the HTC website I can't see the HTN One listed there. Do I select "All Other Supported Models"?
 
the link I posted shows you how to get S -off
and Actually you do need S-off to install the update zip file
Yes you dont need it to flash a custom rom , but if you want to stay stock and just update with the files that are released overseas
you need to have S off.
S-Off stands for security off , which allows you to update the other wise locked partition.

Simple terms
Your on 4.2.2 You want 4.3
You download the update
You need to return to stock recovery (if you already rooted and are running a custom recovery)
You need S-off
Then you place the Update zip on your phone
You browse to it (you cant do the browsing on Stock recovery if you dont have S-off)
Run zip and update
you are 4.3 now

If you want to flash a custom 4.3 ROM the you just need a unlocked boot loader , root , custom recovery
then browse and flash new rom .
