Official Rugby World Cup 2015 Thread

The first semi-final will take place at Twickenham between South Africa and New Zealand on Saturday (kick-off 16:00) with France’s Garcès in the middle. He will be joined on the line by compatriot Romain Poite and Ireland’s John Lacey with George Ayoub of Australia being the television match official.

The following day at the same venue, Argentina will take on Australia in the second semi-final (kick-off 16:00) and England’s Wayne Barnes will take charge. His assistant referees will be Jaco Peyper of South Africa and Ireland’s George Clancy. New Zealand’s Ben Skeen will be TMO.

I was quite active in many sports, and at one time watched almost anything...but you get older and more cynical you know.....however, as someone that still competes in running (40 yrs now) and in running admin, event mgt etc, I never ever sacrifice my own training to watch sport on TV..so if I have to get up early to run 30km on a Sunday, or help at an event...I wont watch a game instead.

In terms of the rules, I broadly know what they ought to be without knowing the section and sub section headings...in fact I called it to the missus, that he got it wrong in my opinion and that was off real speed at the time, the laws are pretty common sensical..

....it's not really rocket science, and for a very experienced ref to do that, so quickly and decisively, knowing that it will affect the outcome irreversably, ...there has to be more to it imo

Didn't need TMO at all...he had to stop the game anyway for the minimum of a scrum to Oz...therefore he could have surveyed situation soberly...was Welsh loitering- no, did it come off Phipps - yes, was Phipps contesting ball- yes...and he could have called on assistant..

...it actually beggars belief, and I said that yesterday.

Looks like I was wrong as well, but just on the technicality of it. It did come off of Josh like I said, but the Aussie intentionally playing the ball effectively put the scot onside.

Anyway, showing how the opinions was split in three different ways really shows how tight of a call it was.

I still want to hear Joubert's reasoning for jogging off of the field immediately.


Focusing on this weekends game... the closer we get, the more I have a feeling that the NZ/SA game isn't going to be a run away by the All Blacks... I think we might be in for a close one... and going by the upsets we've already had in this RWC, why can't we have another one. :p
 
People obsess with Craig Joubert, when some of the worst in the world get to blow week in and week out.
Now WR comes out with a statement after having watched all the slo-mo replays.

I've got a long list of things Wayne Barnes ignored throughout our Wales game.

Now we have a below affirmative action standard French idiot blowing our game on Saturday.

Why was it a tight call?
The ref could clearly see (or he ought to have if he was looking at play, and if he wasnt he shouldnt guess), that the ball came off Phipps.
He should also have clearly known that Welsh was not loitering even if he didnt follow his movements (which he didn't), given that he came from lineout and ran towards play.

These are quite obvious even in real motion , so I could not understand the confusion. What was that Rugbyref site all about, seems they jsut sing the ref tune

What I cannot understand is the argument that "if the Scots led by more it wouldnt have mattered"...you shouldnt have to score enough in order to make up for poor referreeing.

Edit: I see on rugbyref site they are still asking "so when does 11.9 apply"...gee they are thick, is that a requirement for referreeing? It clearly states 11.9 applies to loitering

You do realise that the Aussies could still have scored off the resulting attacking scrum? To say one decision cost them the game is crazy as you assume that there weren't any other wrong decisions awarded to the Scots earlier in the game.

You can see the Phipps touch in real motion...scrum, and if he then thought about it he could have given penalty if Welsh was loitering.

People miss the real mistake Joubert made, which was to make a hasty, instantaneous, match changing decision without thinking about it

As hypothetical as them not scoring off several other scrums and mauls...lets deal with the penalty which was wrong...point is missed that a decision like that cannot be countered in 60seconds if the other team is 1000 times better.

The beauty is that NZ and SA are being judged on their last game. With NZ running riot and us struggling, most have already written us off (which suits me just fine). The guys can go out there and express themselves, knowing that no one has given them a snowball's chance in Hell while at the same time believing that they can win. A lot has to change from the Welsh game, but it won't be a mauling, like you say.

They won't and nor would the Scots have. It's a non issue tbh. Whichever team wins between NZ and the Boks will be RWC champs 2015.

No big loss. We have capable back-ups for those positions. I feel for poor Lood though, he has been a Monster. But let's assume we win NZ, I would rather have him fit for the final, he deserves that after the way he played this competition.
