Skype has released a beta client of its application for mobile phones. It can be downloaded from www.skype.com/m.

I have tried it on my Nokia E90 (which is unsupported). I have had the following 2 problems:
1. I could not place an outgoing Skype call (but I could receive Skype calls and I could also initiate a Skype chat).
2. My SkypeOut account was charged for the incoming call I received.

Is there anyone with a "supported" phone and a normal Skype account (not a SkypeOut account with credit) that can try out this beta and report back?

Isnt it written in MTN's contract that they have the right to terminate your contract if you use VOIP on their sims?

Heard this somewhere, really awesome if it works tho...

No, it was something along the lines of "We can charge you higher data rates when using VOIP if we decide to", but neither MTN nor Vodacom enforce it (yet?).

Skype works for me on MTN, but it is preferable to have 3G coverage - EDGE doesn't work that well for voice calls.
Otherwise I use it for chats to friends overseas, which uses minimal data.
 
Ok..

Wasnt exactly sure but I remember someone mentioned it to me, only Cell C and MTN tho, once again Im talking from memory...

How do you get to that conclusion?
a skype to skype call only costs you the amount of data ... calling international numbers from you cellphone is kinda pricey ...

anyway .. this little scenario is taken from the skype website

Let's look at an example user (approximate usage only):

Tom has 20 Skype contacts and signs in twice a day for a total of 90 minutes. He IMs for about 25 minutes each day and makes 20 minutes of Skype calls. Tom would use just under 1 MB of data in one month.

without a data bundle that is a total spending of R 2.00 ...

Not exactly the same, because you pay for data usage.

Lets say that you phone someone for 5 minutes on their Skype account. Now assuming that Skype uses 5-10kb/s, the phone call would cost you R3.00-R5.00 using out of bundle data rates, which equates to close to R1.00 per minute.
If that person was overseas, you'd be saving quite a bit.

Obviously, if you have a data bundle, it would cost you less. Adding SkypeOut or an unlimited Skype plan to the equation would inflate the price a bit, depending on your destination, but would still be far cheaper than the international rates that our cellphone providers charge.

Personally, I use Skype through Wifi at home to make my SkypeOut calls; and use my cellphone data connection for Skype chats. On the odd occasion, I'll also make a SkypeOut call using 3G.

ok, so I downloaded the file for my Nokia N80... but it only gave me a "nokiaN80.jad" file which I cannot install. Where is the JAR file?

How am I supposed to install this?

ok, I changed the JAD file into a text file and opened it. There was a link in the file and I SMSed that link to myself and opened it on my Nokia N80, then it started to download the Skype Client. I am installing it now.

lol... um yes... we have been using Fring for several years now. I am pretty sure most everybody here knows about it. We have, though, been waiting for an official client from Skype for about two years ... ever since they announced Skype for Symbian all those yonks ago.

Now, that they have released this though it looks like I will have to leave fring on my Nokia since this Skype client does not have all the features that were promised.

... and Fring does not work "great"... it does not even work "adequately"... it sometimes barely works under the ideal conditions.

Sorry, I don't mean "promised"... poor choice of words... I mean "expected".

This Skype Client on my Nokia N80 charges me for stuff that would be free if I was using a computer.

Thing is... I am basically using a computer, just a small one.
 
Skype rip off

I have investigated this further. This official Skype client is a rip-off. I attribute it to the following:
Skype is probably the world's largest VOIP provider, with decent call quality and fantastic marketing. But their call charges are double, even triple some other VOIP companies and they must be losing market share rapidly. This mobile client is a way to increase their revenue, but they are charging for something that should essentially be free (Skype to Skype calls).

[EDIT: I looked at the iSkoot site - http://www.iskoot.com/skype.php - if you see how the software works, it uses your airtime as well - so, I'm not sure of Skype are the evils ones here, or is it iSkoot.]

Fring works well, but the new version of iSkoot is superb. The new 3 SkypePhone uses a modified version of iSkoot and works a treat.

I have recently moved to Australia from SA. VOIP is big here and call costs are cheap. Skype is being punted by 3Mobile here - I pay $20 extra a month on my Nokia E90 contract and get 500MB of data, mobile cricket TV, access to all 3's mobile content and most importantly, 1000 free minutes a month on Skype (not deducted from my 500MB limit). The mobile client I use is an official Skype product, but only works on the 3 network and you cannot chat with it.

My niece and nephew have SkypePhones. Because they opted for these phones instead of normal Nokia's, they get an additional 4000 free Skype minutes and 10000 free Skype text messages a month. This is great for them, as they are university students happy to use a "normal phone" and not a power user like myself who relies on his S60v3 phone.

So, if 3 can offer free Skype to Skype minutes, sure Skype can do so themselves?
