official xbox hard drive transfer cable

Hi

So basically I brought a used 120gb hdd for my phat xbox and want to transfer my content from my 20gig to my 120gig

I have a transfer cable but it is a generic and it didn't work. I read up on xbox.com that you need the official one as the generic doesnt work with the xbox only with windows.

I then proceeded to look for one online locally and failed :(

Anybody know where I can purchase one locally (durban) or better yet anyone have one I can borrow from in the durban area?

I wouldnt even bother with the transfer cable. Just plug in a USB external hard drive and transfer the content only to the external drive, then plug in the new drive, let XBOX do whatever it needs to do, then transfer the content back from the external drive. Simple and easy.

^this or a USB memory stick does the trick

I call the transfer cable a "n00b catcher" :) ;)
 
Not true for both above posts. I had an RROD old "phat" 'box and my wife bought me a new slim. Seeing as I couldn't get the old one started up anymore and wanted to transfer the data from the old HDD to the new, my only option was the transfer cable. A friendly sale's attendant at BT Games Centurion lent me his transfer cable to get the job done. So no, it's not a noob catcher and it can be used multiple times.

lol, man I was joking. You don't need the transfer cable if you have access to the xbox like the OP has, he's only upgrading his drive, not changing xboxes
 
but what happened is i have a generic chinese one and used that to connect the 2nd hand 120gig drive to the xbox. The xbox then said it needs to format the drive in order to use it so I said fine and it ended up formatting it to 32gb...

If you plug the new drive into the xbox ( not via the transfer cable but where it should be installed )it should pick up the full disk allocation and you can format it again. There is a prepare your drive setup. The 32GB limitation i suspect is cause it is seeing the new drive as a USB. I would still reccomend not using the transfer cable.

Rather transfer the contents to a seperate flash drive or external usb drive, then prepare the new drive and copy all the stuff back to the new drive.

That is how i transferred all my content to my new xbox. It was very easy. For game installs ( besides the saved games you can simply install the disk again rather than copying the entire installed game across)
 
nope didnt work. Plugged it straight into the console and it doesn't detect @ all. plugged my 20gb back in and then connect the 120gb via the chinese cable and it still shows as 32gb usb storage.

Try this link. It seems like your problem I one which many folks have had. Seems like an issue with the way xbox sees the drive.

Also search the forums and web for a resolution.
 
spoke to xbox live support and basically once you have formatted it as a usb drive there is no reverting it back to a hdd.

@durbandave: the link you posted it for wd hdd and this is a hitachi drive. but thanks for the help

@qace: thanks for the offer but I got 1 @ IC and the hdd is stuffed now anyway as i stated above :(
 
plug it into a pc and delete all partitions on the drive, the xbox should then see it as a blank drive and repartition it. It sounds like nonsense that once it is formetted you cannot do it again.
 
well i don't know whatelse to say... if you look @ google there are tons of results of people with the same problem. most of them just take it and get it replaced by microsoft. Even looking @ teamexecutor and c4eva, they only have a way of turning a WD 2.5inch into a xbox hdd.
