Hi guys/gals

I used Veza route planner for many years but the company has shut down and the maps are very outdated.

I would appreciate if you can recommend an offline map application. I have tried the garmap software but didn't like it at all. There are also expensive programs like Maptitude but I can't find proper reviews for SA maps.

Much appreciated!

Are you talking about an app for your phone? What os?

Google is pretty great considering its free, but its not entirely offline, and by that i mean, you can download the maps for the areas you most frequent, and for the rest use 3G.

I'm using maps from www.openstreetmap.org which is an open source map built by the community , there are several applications that allow you to use the maps online or offline.

I'm using the Maverick Android app there is a free version but navigation requires the paid for version.

I suggest giving openstreetmaps a try before you spend allot on a GPS application.

For my Windows PC. Google maps is great, but not really useful for my offline home PC

27GB download  but maybe they have smaller regions for download

What app is on Garmap? For Mac, we get Garmin Basecamp which works a treat.

I see you get Basecamp for Win as well - is that what you tried?

Indeed, but it only showed the main roads like N1, N12. No detailed maps even when you zoom in on the city there are no streets

Did you install maps with unlock codes?

I really tried to but I don't understand the technicalities. I have an old Garmin nuvi but apparently I can not use it to acquire any SA map updates, and I think the maps on the device are not compatible with BaseCamp as I cannot import anything from the device. I borrowed the CD from my brother-in-law (latest 2013 maps), but even that won't import into basecamp...

What I find strange is that the option in Basecamp to install new maps is disabled. So basically me and Garmin don't work together very well, or I am too computer-challenged to use it :D

What model nuvi? I have the 200 and even the old maps work fine. It was quite a procedure to get it to work so don't put yourself down. I can help you but only on Sunday (I am nowhere near my office till then).

If you want the openstreetmaps on your nuvi then go here to create a Garmin compatible img file:
http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/
You can then load this map into your BaseCamp software and onto your nuvi SD card if you want to(just remember to not overwrite your original map or at least back it up)

For a phone:
To export sections of the maps you can go to http://www.openstreetmap.org/ and click on export but the best is probably josm and a base map of SA and update the important sections.
Its a bit of work on the phone, the Nuvi will be much simpler.

I have a Nuvi 200 and use the Mapsource software that came with it (a few years ago). I had to reformat my pc a year or so ago and I discovered it was quite a mission to get everything back as it was but I finally did it. You have to install the stuff in the same order that you originally installed it (ie from the cd's/dvd's that you previously used, plus the activation keys that were sent to you)

I use MapsWithMe on my iphone.
It's also based on OpenStreetMap data.
Works absolutely offline with offline search and bookmarks.
I do really like this app. But I'm not sure do they have it for Windows phone.
