So I'm sure some other people around here are also interested in how to invest off-shore - particularly equities.

I have a couple of questions:

(1) What steps do I need to take to invest off-shore?
(2) What are the costs?

Thanks in advance... :)

Interesting topic indeed.

I've done some research, there are so many ways. You get the off shore ZAR unit trust funds, USD unit trust funds (R100k min in most cases for USD based funds) etc with Allan Gray, Coronation etc.

Then you get the DBX tracker ETFs (from Deutsche Bank) available on any share trading system. These are quite nice. Easy, cheap way to invest offshore.

Then you get global stock broking accounts with FNB, Standard bank, PSG. This is where it gets interesting for me. You can buy directly ETFs on the New York and London stock exchange etc. But its expensive, so you don't want to go there if you don't have R150k minimum - this is the problem.

So yeah, not sure whats the best, depends on the person really

My financial advisor recommended Allan Gray's Orbis equity feeder funds - it's a managed fund so you're not exactly trading stocks but it seems to have done well recently.

Easiest are the DBX ETFs (as ^ said). DBXUS seems to perform better historically, but DBXWD is more is probably a safer.

This has become very topical in the last fortnight or so, motivated largely by a growing pessimism about the outlook for SA over the next few years.

Great to see this getting addressed in a topic, I've been curious about it for a while myself. Mostly with the idea of placing X amount into select stocks as a form of long term value guarantee with returns being a nice bonus.

Looking forward to see this thread proceed!

Just take care to distinguish between moving the money overseas vs investments with exposure to foreign markets. (Both valid approach depending on motive)

I toyed with the EU DBX for a while...didn't go all that well. Now the plan of action is to transfer it to a foreign bank account & figure out what to do from there....that way its not connected to SA at all.

Thanks will look into those things but dont have the capital right now to invest in some of those things you mentioned. Have money already with Allan Gray.
