Six people were arrested after an attempted cash-in-transit heist at Ogies, Mpumalanga, on Wednesday morning, the Hawks said.

The Hawks had received information of the planned heist and were waiting to pounce on the robbers, Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said.

Six robbers cornered and disarmed SBV security guards and were about to make off with an undisclosed amount of money when members of the Hawks' tactical unit arrived.

"A network jammer, two vehicles, the stolen money, and a firearm have been recovered."

Network jammers can disable cellphone reception and interfere with global positioning system (GPS) trackers.

"The suspects, aged between 41 and 47, will appear before the Ogies Magistrate's Court facing charges of armed robbery, possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition, and illegal possession of a network jammer."

One of those arrested was linked to four other serious cases, including truck hijacking and armed robbery.

Acting head of the Hawks Maj-Gen Mthandazo Ntlemeza praised the officers on their execution of a well-planned operation.

"We applaud our brave members for once again putting their lives on the line to safeguard the country.

"...Criminals must be warned that we are ready to deal with them. We will not allow our communities to be terrorised by a lawless minority," Ntlemeza said.

Johannesburg - They had a signal jammer, a firearm, two vehicles and, allegedly, an ex-Bafana Bafana player on their team.

But the six-member gang’s plans to pull off a heist were foiled before they could leave the scene.

The Star understands that former Bafana and Jomo Cosmos star Lebogang Morula and five other men allegedly cornered SBV security guards in Ogies, Mpumalanga, on Wednesday morning while they were loading money at an ATM. The gang disarmed them before robbing them of an undisclosed amount of money.

While the robbery was in progress, a Hawks tactical team pounced on the group, having had information that the heist would take place.

Hawks spokesman Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said he could not confirm or deny whether Morula was one of the suspects arrested.

He said: “One of the suspects has already been linked to four serious cases, which, among others, include truck hijacking and armed robbery.”

It was not the first time Morula allegedly had a brush with the law.

In October 2011, it was reported that Morula and four Zimbabweans were arrested after they were allegedly found in possession of stolen goods worth R4.2 million.

Morula was out on bail at the time for a similar incident.

Acting head of the Hawks Major-General Mthandazo Ntlemeza said: “Criminals must be warned that we are ready to deal with them.We will not allow our communities to be terrorised by a lawless minority.We will disrupt all your operations, we will derail all your plans and we will ensure we remove you from society.”

He said the suspects, aged between 41 and 47, would appear in the Ogies Magistrate’s Court soon to face charges of armed robbery, possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, and illegal possession of a network jammer.

THREE CLEARED OF INVOLVEMENT IN OGIES HEIST

Three men arrested in connection to an attempted cash-in-transit heist in Ogies, Mpumalanga, have been released, the Hawks said on Saturday.

"[They] were released as they could not be linked to the case," Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said.

They were part of a group of six who were arrested on Wednesday.

The three other suspects appeared in the Ogies Magistrate's Court on Friday.

The case against Billy Malope, Thabane Twala and Lebogang Maroele was postponed to February 25 for their bail application.

They face charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm, possession of stolen property as well as armed robbery.

I have some doubts about it being mil spec.

1. See picture, the port cover has detached from its tether
2. That fans does not appear to have any form of protection from the ingress of dust etc.

This level of quality control is most likely carried through in the entire product.



I have not yet met a bomb technician that used a cellphone jammer (and there is a very good reason to minimize radio signals near a remotely detonated IED or bomb) And if they did, it would certainly not be in their best interest to use a product this with level of QA.

And having worked with Chinese hardware rated to IP67 and MIL-STD-810F levels - you always look past the non-native English and idiosyncratic construction.
Besides - China. Every second warehouse in Shenzhen is running a copy of someone else's design. There's buyers who've made a career digging through all the crud to find the good stuff.
 
Huh this doesn't make sense. 6 robbers and SBV security guards were arrested, now 3 released.
Something not right or very poor reporting as usual.
 
Good. If I were there, I would be sorely tempt to stomp on their heads while they were down like that. It would give me such a nice feeling.
